Planning on getting an Ipad mini but was also thinking about getting an Nexus 7 for the cost. The only downside is that I have never been able to get an android phone to output audio through the usb like a regular ipod. Is a Nexus 7 capable of doing this?

All you need to do is root the nexus and get an OTG cable, then you will need to use a USB DAC for usb to 3.5mm stereo out. An example of a USB dac is an audioquest dragonfly or similar. Search the XDA Dev forums for lots of detailed info on integrating a Nexus as a HU.

Current Setup:

Nexus 7 Tablet

According to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32945793&postcount=699 you can connect a dac to the EVO LTE if you are using the Kernel offered at the top of the thread, but he was unable to actually get audio out of it.

This is the only reference I could find.

If this feature is really important to you, this company has a list of phones currently working with their dac chip. You may consider one of them for your next phone upgrade.

I was looking at this route, but decided to just buy a Windows 8 tablet so I could also control my DSP.

if you have the first gen nexus 7 root it and use that rom, if you are using as an in dash install. It will go to deep sleep if it detects power loss and turn back on when power is restored. With an otg cable you can do usb audio out and charge at the same time. I will be using a behringer dac that happens to have a toslink output and running that to a 360.3.
