can a port be too big?

I still don't understand how it could be free-airing if it is still in an enclosure and still has a first and second resonance.

:)

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.

This is actually really interesting. So, it's perfectly fine to have a huge port as long as you can set your subsonic/gains right? it'd actually be a really good idea for those watt limit competitions.

I want to go back and correct myself when I said "5 m/s port velocity".

I was just rereading the paper by Richard H. Small and he said that it should be near 5% the velocity of sound.

I messed the first time I read this and read it as 5 m/s, I'm not sure how, but I did.

So now to correct myself I should have said 17m/s (at sea level) not 5.

Krakin's Home Dipole Project

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

The smoothest low end you'll ever hear. At 17hz, my power meter slaps the side of the house!

How does it compare to IB?

I'd say it's similar, but I would say the same speaker on the same output power would give you more output. How much? I couldn't tell you. Someone once suggested nearly 3 db, since you're effectively doubling cone surface area. I've never measured to be honest and my "test box" is still sitting in my living room. That's not because I've been lazy, but because it sounds pretty damn good and no one I know is willing to put the thing in their home theater due to SWMBO factor. It's ginormous! I'd hate to cut it apart, since there's nothing wrong with it. I even offered it to my buddy for $100 (much less than the cost of wood), but his wife said "hell no!"

great thread! wish i understood a Lil more of this. I've been into car audio for 13yrs now but only got interested in the enclosure part a months ago. i was all about the electrical side of this addiction. i knew boxes were important but never cared to learn. then boom its all i want to know and learn about!

from reading this looks like i have allot of research ahead of me today!
