Cheap/good sound deadner alternatives?

Recommended Posts

OP- if you want a cheaper alternative, FatMat has a line called MegaMat that it make with the butyl rubber backing and not the tar on the P&S. It has worked great for me and went on easy just need to be rolled on. I know it's not as thick or as good as the expensive stuff but for the price you can't beat it. I had 50 ft^2 in my trunk and just bought 25ft^2 more for the rest of my car.

Companies I have use or sell similar products.

RAAMMAT

Dynamat

SecondSkin

SoundQubed

or

Foam Factory

RAAMMAT is the cheapest I have found in bulk but their prices went up.

Really it doesn't matter too too much as long as the material is the same. Most companies are selling the same types of products so finish quality may be a lot different and formulation of the material will be of course.

Process:

Lay up small peices of a butyl/aluminum sound deadner are larger panels to break up the resonnance across the panels and reduce panel flex (you are adding weight mostly), cover in a viso-elastic or whatever its called closed cell foam to break up sound waves and quell rattles. If you want to get fancy you can go to Cascade Audio or better yet SecondSkin and get a spray on sound deadner which I would BET its more like a rubberized material but thats a guess. But the spray on stuff is great for places where its hard to get to and sealing small gaps.

Ya know if you are really looking for something cheap closed-cell foam and the foam undercarpet pads are great. You can usually get them from carpet stores for next to nothing and it will kill a couple dB without spending $200+.

Just remember that for every dB of white noise you kill, (road noise, wind, engine noise, rattles) thats more of your music that you are going to be able to hear which means you can turn down your stereo a bit and get the same output. Or up your spl score a little bit more I would bet.
