DylanBunch Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 I have a friend who is looking into running at the most 4k total between bass and his doors and he's trying to avoid getting a new alternator, can he safely run that much power off a stock alt and a good upgraded battery reserve? His alt is super hard to get to if you're wondering why he's avoiding a new one 2006 Ford Explorer 2 Team AA/Sundown 15s 6th order Ct Sounds 7k 4 PRV Mr500 8s Rockford p1000-2 Team Subsonic Lows
SMF93 Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 What size is his current alternator? If he plans on running 4K rms he is going to have to upgrade from a stock alt and will also need extra battery's, I don't see any way of getting around buying a H/O alt when dealing with approximately 4,000 watts
Rich Schenk Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 He needs to bite the bullet and upgrade the alternator. And have a decent battery bank. You have to pay to play! SPL.Pantie.Soak Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Oh damn I was hoping to get away with this too, what ill do--- 5 deka 9a31s on 3500 @0.5 light on the gain, then buy a 370 amp Mechman after a bit. Unfortunately I don't have $700 laying around Kenwood KVT-614 (4) Marathon 155 AH batts 2/0 OFC SHCA Mechman 370 (2) Audioque 3500.1 (2) AA Mayhem 15s
xxgokouxx Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Excuse me if my answers wrong. But the batteries are just for short reserves aren't they? If you don't have a decent to good alt to back it up, isn't it really taxing on the stock alt? Causing premature failure?
SMF93 Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Those battery's are 265$ each so for 5 it would be over 1300$ if I were you I would buy a quality h/o alt and 3 or so batteries.

Kyblack76 Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Risk assume. Some alts are not doable. Got a dc 5k at .7 with a 3400 2x 3100s to run OK on a stock ford escape alt. But, told owner to eagle EYE THAT shit. Optimum. No. Doable. Sure. SMD SUPER SELLER The Burban Build Blazer Build sold Acura trunk build sold
John Fassetta Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 A lot depends on the stock alternator. Some are 80 amps, some are 180 amps. My truck has a 150 amp alt stock and just a duralast gold upfront. I've been able to stay at 12.5volts and up with 1/0 Knu OFC wiring and 4 gauge CCA (for my CT1400.1 and PDX 4.100). That's about 2500 rms. My girlfriends Altima was quickly dropping to upper 11volts with only 1600 watts rms. She has a 110 amp alternator. My guess is my truck was designed with more "headroom" amps for a trailer. I wouldn't bother with 5 D31's personally.
