It's a good gun, but it needs fit to you. The P 250 does have a long trigger pull, but Sig makes excellent guns. If it fits you, then you made a good choice. Not my cup of tea but its a good defensive pistol.

For $500, it is hard here, but H&K is where to invest if you are going to lay down cash at all.

Not a fan of Glock.

Any specific models?

HK 45 Compact - http://www.hk-usa.com/civilian_products/hk45c_general.asp

or

HK P2000 SK (sub-compact) - http://www.hk-usa.com/civilian_products/p2000sk_general.asp

only thing about the hk is its a metal frame so.its heavier and they are expensive even used. Mags are never cheap either. Good pieces though.

the sig 250 gets a meh from me. Ir does nothing better than a glock or a xd or an m&p which are the frontrunners in that price range and style. It also has expensive mags that are much harder to find. If I was picking at this point it would be a glock an xd or a smith and wesson m&p in compact size in the caliber of your choice.

Buy a good belt as well

N8 is dead on, especially with the price ... which is why I first made note of it in my initial post.

If you are dead set in the $500'ish-range, then something by H&K - which can easily carry close to $1,000 when new - puts one out of your stated budget ... I went on the "Best Pistol - IMHO - For First &/Or Conceal" ... just to throw something else out here.

Something else to keep in mind, if it matters, ... oftentimes you do not get what you pay for, ... though in this situation, you definitely do, ... & in case of future sale, a well-kept H&K keeps its value in a major way.

Less than $500 would put you in several Rossi revolvers, and I've had friends and my father own and shoot then without complaint. If revolver is something you're interested in.

Under $500 in a semi auto, I'd personally hunt for second hand 1911's.
