smalller pulley

Recommended Posts

What are the pros and cons of running a smaller pulley?. I have been getting very low voltage at idle, (12-12.2v @ at 650 rpm engine speed). Mine is a 98 Cadillac Deville with CS-144 series alternator and OEM pulley is 62mm and going to install a 42mm. any concerns? Alternator is rated at 210 amps.

Potentially faster wear (more rpm at all times). Don't think there is any other down side. MIGHT need a new/different belt.

Several systems, several vehicles. Always changing!

what alt is it. you need to have teh largest pulley you can fit while still maintaining idle. this can be calculated by measuring crankshaft pulley diameter.

the alternator is stock. All I know is it is the cs-144 series. I had it rebuilt 3 years ago to 210 amps and it worked fine until I started getting the "BATTERY NOT CHARGING" message last fall. Stored for the winter, now trying to fix things. I brought it back to rebuilder and he said he took it apart and tested it and examined brushes, stator, voltage regulator, diodes and all checked out fine, he recommended the smaller pulley. I also took it to about five different AutoZone and o'reilleys and they all said it passed all their tests. I have not measured crankshaft pulley. I also have new belt a 1/2" shorter than the original and a new tensioner I'm going to install. They are DAYCO brand, I know not the best but will they do the job?? What's the formula for measuring RPMs and crankshaft and alt pulley?? Wrap and contact are less on a smaller pulley I assume?? Thanks for any help/info. Yea, the 12v at idle is unacceptable to me too. It starts out in the morning at 14.4v initially then kicks down to 13.6v or so as I drive around but will go down to 12.0 when at stop signs and idling. When I 'm on freeway at 55-70-MPH, it will eventually go back up to 13.9v or 14.4v but will go back down as I come to a stop. Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated. I'm about to put this thing back together this week and want to know of any potential areas I can address while I got the damn thing taken apart. No an easy job on this caddy.

if it all checked out fine and you are idling at 650 it should be doing something. does it increse voltage when you rev engine?

It was before, but I haven't put it back together yet since he put on smaller pulley. I just got everything ready to go. I think I'm gonna start putting it back together tonight. Yea, it increased voltage when I revved engine up to 900 to 1500 to 1700 RPMs, but always went way down when engine speed was idling at 650 RPMs and then I started getting the occasional, intermittent "BATTERY NOT CHARGING" message, that's why I took it out and had it checked.

you took the alternator apart? did you put all the connections together properly?

sounds like the pcm may be an issue. a 98 caddy could potentially have had that technology. how many wires plug into the voltage regulator?

Nah, I didn't do any alternator work, I wish I had time to learn, I just take them out and put them in. I'm waiting for some free time to put it back in and test it out with smaller pulley. With havin to remove everything to make room to drop alternator and the two brackets it has, and workin from underneath, it is a job in itself just doing that. I t was a bad design by Cadillac. That's why I was asking for some advice about what to do while I had it out. What's the deal with the PCM???
