Old-School RF 15" Punch Power Sub-woofer build log

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, wanted to share this with you. First I'll post up finished pics, then I'll follow up with the build pics.

This was a fun sub to build, and I am seriously impressed with it's performance. As you can see, I did not touch the motor or frame, other than to add spacers. (It was just in too good of shape to mess with for such an old sub)

Blurry pic, but that is dual stitched leads

I'll post up the build pics in the next posts.

It is in good shape, damn. Good work, I'm in for pics ;)

They are uploading now. Wait till you see what came out of it... :peepwall:

For those wondering, it had a D4 ohm round wire copper coil (w cardboard former extender), single poly linear spider, dual flat wire direct 8g leads, and pulp cone w/ stiff foam surround. And yes this is the 4" coil motor.

It now has a D2 ohm flat wound aluminum (Power HX2) coil, dual soft Nomes progressive roll spiders w dual stitched leads, 8g chrome push terminals, a Sundown Zv.3 cone (soft dual layer foam, double stitched surround) and spaced frame (for much improved cooling). RMS is now a true 2K

The difference is night and day....

Okay, so I bought this as a "working sub", but with the understanding that something just wasn't right with it. So I planned to re-build it from the start, with some upgrades in mind. Here is what it looked like when I got it.

And here is what I found when I cut the sub apart.

Nice toasty over-heated coil. I got a plan to avoid this for the next build...

But first, the new parts

So now for the changes to the motor/ frame. I didn't want to mess with painting since it was in the condition it was (nice) so I focused on the cooling issues.
Since these frames are not vented, they tent to over-heat easily. To fix I simply added spacers between the motor and frame. This also helps with the fit of the Power coil.

And a sneak peak of this subs little brother

Hope you all like them!

Got several more subs built recently as well, so stay tuned!
