dharris2488 Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Hey guys, I have a question. Now, I am here to learn, so don't flame me please. If I did something wrong, just let me know. But, from what I've seen on YouTube and how to "clamp test" your amp for RMS power, I did everything correct, or at least I think I did. I clamped the + speaker wire with clamp meter and measured AC Volts, put my DMM leads into the other set of speaker terminals to measure load. I came up with 48.5 volts and around 13.5ohms. This comes out to around 645. Now, I know this isn't dead balls accurate, but we aren't even in the same ballpark as 2200 watts. I wasn't expecting to get that much, but 645? The other formula i used was to this: AC Volts/AC Current = Impendance then take AC Volts squared/Impedance and I get around 670 watts plus or minus a few. Why are my numbers so low? Is this normal? Just doesn't seem correct... I know I'm getting the power to my subs, as they are banging. There is no way i'm only giving my subs 325 watts each... My recorded impedance was 3.55 and I have my amp wired at 1ohm... What's up? Can someone explain this to me? I really would like to learn more about this. I'm also about the strap another 2200.1D and I want to make sure my electrical is on the up and up. So, would it be safe to wire 1ohm on my future build? I just ordered (2) Ethos 12's D2, so I would be nominally 2ohms. Should I ask Quentin if he will change my order to D1's? So, I really am only seeing about 650 watts? that's crazy to me! What's the best way to fix this? I guess it happens to everyone, so we are all on an even playing field? Is this something I need, or is it just an extremely accurate way of measuring what I'm truly making? Sorry if these are dumb questions. I've never bothered with rise, so this is new to me. So, when someone says they are running 5000 watts, they really are probably only running a quarter of that? Or is that when you see the guys wiring to a 1/4ohm and really putting their equipment in danger? I would be scared to lose my investment by wiring that low! Guest Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 only easy way to fix it is to wire lower. get D1 coils, wire to 1 ohm. itll help. if you want, you can go below 1 ohm. i know a guy running four crescendo 5500's at .33 ohms daily and they're fine. your mileage may vary. i'd wire to half ohm, but thats just me.

I just have a hard time believing those subs can take any more than what I'm giving them... I feel like im in a time warp or something right now. Trying to wrap my head around it is difficult. I believe you guys, as the numbers obviously show it. I guess now I really understand what's going on down there. I understand why the money is spent to help eliminate this... I would need like 15 batteries and 3 more alternators to make my amp really put out its rated power. Is that the basic principal? Takes power to make power, huh? All this time, I thought 3 batteries and a 240amp MechMan was getting the job done! YEAH EFFIN' RIGHT!!! I guess at least we are all fighting the same damn thing...
