High Output liquid cooled alternator???

Recommended Posts

First, I am waiting to hear back from Mechman, but want to see what options I have while I wait instead of just twiddling my thumbs.

Car is a 2001 BMW 740i which uses a stock 150A liquid cooled alt.

Does anyone have experience or know of anyone with any German imports that use liquid cooled alts and what they did to add an HO alt? These are used in various model BMW's and Benz's around 1999-2005, high end S-class, and 7-series, and other imports I am sure, but anyways,

The dealer charges about $800 for a stock replacement... I can get a manufactured alt for less than $200, and have a spare that I pulled from a salvage yard for $20, so I am wondering what it takes to build an HO or if I can take it somewhere to get it rewound?

It's liquid cooled, not worried about overheating, it's in a separate loop than the engine block, and I just did an electric fan upgrade, the radiator outlet temp is only a few degrees above ambient temperature where it splits to the block and alt and transmission cooler, so the alt would stay running cool. These rarely go out at stock amperage, 200k+ miles on originals since they stay so cool.

Any ideas on what I can do? Converting to a normal fan cooled alt isn't an option, would require major lower timing case modifications.

I forgot to mention that I'm wanting about a 250A alt replacement.

Also, has anyone heard of highampspecialist from Cali? They make a 240A

I guess I know how to pick the tough questions huh. Where's the guy that knows everything in about every other thread when you need him? :unknw:

Are there any other reputable companies that do quality rewinds that anyone can recommend? Still waiting to hear back from Mechman. Irragi does rebuilds but I'm not reading good things about them... DC Power's support side of their page is down. I'll see if Ohio Gen will do a rewind for me.

Thanks

BTW, not going with the highampspecialist alt, someone did and idle voltage was 15.5V, and revving the engine shot the voltage up to over 20V... luckily he didn't fry any computers.

EDIT: Found where someone was able to get a quote from Singer Alternators out of Ohio so I'll message them tonight.

So you want to keep the liquid cooling? You can't just stick a traditional style alternator in the same spot and plug the coolant hose? Would this make the computer go nuts?

The problem is that the stock alternator slides into it's holder that fills up with water, so the back would need to be cut out to provide any type of airflow, and it's part of the lower timing case... you can see it here at the lower driver side of the engine where the alt would go. I'd rather not mess with it, but a traditional alt would be fine if I had a place to put it,

Yeah. I hope to be able to find something. One thing that sucks about imports.

I did find out that there is an 180A stock replacement that some of the 745i's use which may be a direct replacement for my older 740i, so keeping that idea on the back burner. I was just hoping to find something around 250A to feed a single T2500-bdcp + PPI P900.4 ...

Do you guys think a 180A would be enough for this equipment?

EDIT: Ninja'd. And I think I answered my own question, Rockford is recommending a 200A on their site for just the T2500, so I think I'd need a 250A adding the P900.4
