Hey i was wondering if i could turn off the subsonic filter on my amp without destroying the subs. its set at 30 hz, and it cant be changed, only turned off. the box is tuned at 30 hz and the subs only have half their rated power going to them. I kind of want to see if it makes a difference in the low end.

Sorry, first it's infrasonic. Subsonic means slower than the velocity of sound.

Second, infrasonic filters are there to protect and are typically set around half an octave below the tuning frequency.

Below tuning there is no acoustic protection from over excursion.

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

*infrasonic excuse me lol.

And i know what they are there for. But i typically don't play lower than 25 hz. and i would have set it around 23-25 if it was selectable. What im asking is will turning it off and playing 5 hz below tuning destroy my subs on half power. At that frequency the infrasonic filter, would it have been selectable wouldn't even have been engaged. I'm asking this because i'm considering getting a new amp with a selectable filter, and i'm wondering if this will allow me to play lower with more authority. But obviously i want some opinions before i try it.

There are some songs that have some hard low notes in there.

Lets say that there is one note in the song that is below tuning and has a huge amplitude.

Now think of sex.

Both have one climax, but if you don't protect in sex you are gonna have a bad time.

If you don't protect with you infrasonic filter it only takes one hard hit on the back plate or a note that makes the excursion just unlinear enough to cause mechanical damage.
