Resting voltage

Recommended Posts

So I have a duralast gold starting battery and a group 31 Juicebox agm in the back.

Since I am at school there is periods that i wont drive my truck. My question is at what voltage should i go out and drive the truck to charge back up.

I just checked it after almost 3 days and its resting at 12.77v. What is everybody comfortable with for voltage?

Thanks for the help.

I only ask because when i was driving my truck daily for work, i could come out in the morning and be resting at 13.1v, so my current voltage compared to that is what concerns me

Do you have both batteries in parallel together without any type of battery isolator? Different batteries rest and different voltages, so if they are in parallel they will rest at the lower of the two voltages.

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

Yea thats why I'm here lol lead acid and an agm together. I know the acid will pull the agm down over time, but I am wondering at what point do i run the truck to charge the agm back up? I will eventually upgrade the front to agm but thats not for atleast a few months.

  • 2 weeks later...

So you can wire multiple batteries with different resting voltages I thought I read somewhere if the resting voltages weren't equal they would just keep draining each other apparently they rest at the lower voltage? I would at least get 2 Agm batteries never really knew why mixing is bad but I'll stick with the idea

You are not supposed to. I should have worded my question better, basically i was wondering at what point do i run the truck to charge the agm back up to its rest voltage since i dont have access to a charger at the dorms. They seem to settle at 12.7 and dont really drop any lower than that so it should be ok. Besides, I will just drive the truck every few days or so. Once winter comes, i will just pull the fuses.

I have had my AGMs which are connected to my wet cell under the hood sitting for up to about 3-4 weeks no problem. Your resting voltage sounds pretty normal, for your situation. I always like to take all my batteries out every few months and get them fully charged up. Mixing batteries is not (recommended) you just wont get the performance out of them if they were all AGMs. You can get a battery isolator to prevent the your duralast from dragging down your AGM but i would just save for another AGM up front under the hood. Thats my plan!

Yea, an xs D3400 will fit perfect under the hood. eventually i will get one. But with college started back up I can't really throw more money at it for a while, atleast not until December.
