Corsa B daily build with single 12" Ground Zero - 146.2 @ 36hz

Recommended Posts

I did some testing today with an SPL Lab meter. My round flared port, tuned at 31-32hz performed better than the square wooden port, which is tuned at about 34-35. The wooden port peaked at 39hz and the round port was flat from 34 to 39hz with 0.1-0.2 difference.

Best scores with drivers door open:

Tomorrow I will put my old box to compare the results from this mic with the one from my last competition.

I also clamped my amp, getting 1070 watts at 2,4 ohms. I don't know how accurate it is, but I don't care :D Someday I might test it with an AMM-1.

I decided it's high time I made my door pods. I couldn't easily fit rings directly on the sheet metal, so I went with the easy way. I drilled and scratched the plastic for better contact with the resin - it helped a lot, but I'm sceptical about this whole thing lasting long.

After that I glued the rings to the plastic with montage adhesive - just in case something wents wrong with the fiberglass.
I then ran speaker cables from the amplifier to the doors, and then a new pair of RCA's. Door pods in place:

Am I satisfied? Absolutely. These aren't the best sounding drivers, but they do MUCH better than my stock speakers, especially in midbass performance. I can finally listen to normal music without it sounding like shit. The mids lack midrange, though, so I might replace them with something better in time.

I also made a higher tuned port - 40-41hz from wood, like my previous one - again, it did worse than the round flared.. Maybe the box is too large for 40hz++ frequencies. I might shrink the box a bit and see if it works.

Other than that, with the round port it plays pretty flat from 33hz to 40hz, always over 143db on the windshield. It peaks at 38 and 39. My best score to date is 144,3 in the kick @38 and 39hz, but this is without the door panels and I tested with my previous box that they gain 0,1-0,3 in different frequencies.

Don't shrink the box you will just lose efficiency. Why can't you make a higher tuned round port?

I don't have a flare mould, that's why :/ This port was flared by a friend of mine, but he's busy all the time and I don't want to disturb him. Maybe someday I'll make one myself :)

Tested today with the door pods on - looks like peak frequency has shifted.

So I added an extra battery in the engine bay, connected it to the alternator and engine for ground, and with 1/0 gauge to my main battery and same for ground on the chassis. Made a few adjustments and tweaks and achieved a new score - 146.2 @ 36hz on the windshield, driver's door opened. It was on the competition today. I was third in my category, first and second place took two guys from Serbia with burp setups. I am VERY pleased with the result. Next step - staining the box with resin!

I think it's time to update the topic.

My electrical was sh*t, so I had to buy a new alternator. I found that a 120a alt from a much bigger diesel engine on a different car would fit without much struggle, so I bought one used and changed it's bearings.
I also bought a 60ah AGM battery, so I am now using one 60ah AGM and one 44ah lead acid. I know that it's not the best thing to mix different types of batteries, but they won't be staying together for long and I'm driving the car almost every day, so I hope that I won't have any problems.

Next thing was deadening. I didn't have enough money for the whole car, so I left the floor with no deadening. I decided to go a bit further on the roof, so I added some metal bracing. I didn't want to ruin my roof completely, so I glued them instead of welding. And I still have to complete the doors with deadener.

So that's it for now. I am VERY pleased with the results so far, but there are some things that can be further improved. Voltage stays 13,3+ most of the time, lowest I've seen is 12,9 on idle. The deading improved the sound very much and I haven't even deadened the whole car yet!
We'll see what I'll do on my next competition, which is in 2 weeks.

Hey,nice build.Where in Bulgaria are you from?my wife is from Dobrich and we have a place in Varna but we're in the states now.

I'm surprised by what I see there but its rare that I see a real system. Is there any real shops besides Ground Zero?

Good luck with the build

Robert
