MrSkippyJ Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 that is a bold ass statement. What makes you think it will go lower??? because 2 12's add up to 24.. 18 being the lower number will hit lower You have just confused the hell out of me!! i was being dumb.. im, trying to figure out why people think larger subs get lower OOH hah. Ahmed Johnson Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Inb4 OP banned for being a smart ass about vs. Thread. Same exact power or what? 2 subs would run cooler as well. lol,
FocusOn20s Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 I was always under the impression that the bigger the sub, the easier is was to play low notes. Not necessarily playing lows better, but more efficiently.I will say this. Motor force definitely trumped cone area when I went from a DC Level 3 15 to a Tantric HD 12
MrSkippyJ Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Think about it this way... If you could make everything the same except one set up was made up of 18s and another was made up of 8s would they have a different useable bandwidth? I realize making those the same isn't really possible but use your imagination. I was always under the impression that the bigger the sub, the easier is was to play low notes. Not necessarily playing lows better, but more efficiently.I will say this. Motor force definitely trumped cone area when I went from a DC Level 3 15 to a Tantric HD 12 You say motor force, but you changed more than just the motor. How do you attribute the change solely to motor force? Phaeton Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 so your saying four 8's will play just as low as one 18? with a 18 you can always tune high and make decent upper bass, you cant hit 25hz with authority with 8's unless you have a massive amount of them 1997 subaru legacy outback Four 15's in a almost wall Rockford Fosgate t2500-1bdcp Rockford Fosgate T400-4 on tweets Rockford Fosgate T400-4 on highs Rockford Fosgate T400-2 on midrange Rockford Fosgate T400-2 on midbass Optima Yellow top batteries 270A Singer alt (working on a bracket for a second) Lots of Second Skin
Krakin Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 You can't say added cone area does not help with an extended bass-shelf. With that logic a 1 inch speaker would be doing as well as an 18. Yes it helps, but a 10 in a better design for low-end extensions will do better than an 18 in a cookie cutter box. However, if you have both in a proper enclosure they will be close to each other, but physics dictates that a larger cone area will have a higher output. Now I can't specify as to how far apart the two systems will be in response or if there is even an audible difference, but remember double cone area without maintaining constant power (ex: (1) 18" at 1kW or (2) 18"s at 500W a piece) will have the same output. I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . . What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself but what has drawn your attention in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears, thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

Agree completely. But again, if you have equal amounts of cone area it won't matter if it's 1 larger sub or a number of smaller ones. It does have to be a speaker designed to play at those frequencies though. A tweeter isn't designed to reproduce those frequencies. But yes, an 18 will play lows louder than an 8, but not because its a bigger speaker, because its more cone area. Add 2 more 8s (or whatever amount makes the cone area similar) and all of the sudden lows are the same. Phaeton Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 some dude with 8-9 pyle 6.5" subs was showing them off in a thread not to long ago and everyone told him they wouldnt play low, which they didnt really. You can also get louder with 18's because when was the last time you heard of a 8" take anything more than 1k? the DD Z can take massive amounts of power, RE MT can to. you could have ten 8's on 10k watts or one 18 on 10k. its more cost effective depending what you buy aswell. 1997 subaru legacy outback Four 15's in a almost wall Rockford Fosgate t2500-1bdcp Rockford Fosgate T400-4 on tweets Rockford Fosgate T400-4 on highs Rockford Fosgate T400-2 on midrange Rockford Fosgate T400-2 on midbass Optima Yellow top batteries 270A Singer alt (working on a bracket for a second) Lots of Second Skin
