rfbasshead Posted January 9, 2015 Author Report Posted January 9, 2015 From the battery terminals and the power and ground inputs on the amp
SLYentist Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 whats the resting voltage (car off) at the battery terminals, and also at the amp terminals. There should not be a difference any larger than about .5 volts. Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.
redwolf2 Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 I can't seem to find the wiring you used for the actual connections to the amps. Are we talking 4ga flea market special? Just leads me to believe (with the evidence provided) it's a wiring issue. Stick your DMM test probe through the jacket of the wire at various locations (and tape them afterwards for good measure) and see if the ends have degraded
rfbasshead Posted January 9, 2015 Author Report Posted January 9, 2015 Idk about the voltage difference with the car off ... And no, it's definitely not swapmeet quality wire. I bought the amp kit from Rockford Fosgate. I bought another power and ground wire (again, Rockford Fosgate), so let's see what happens. I'll give an update as soon as I get it swapped out.
Hifonics Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 What about belt slip? Perhaps your belt is old and when it gets hot it stretches and slips, causing the alt not to spin and causing it not to charge your battery as much or at all... 2010 F150 FX4-18" AA Mayhem-Crescendo BC3500d-Pioneer GM-D9500F 4-channel-2 Crescendo FT1 -2 Crescendo Neo Forte 6.5 -Pioneer AVH-P3300BT-6000K HID Headlights/Fog lights-All LED interior lighting-20% tint on front windows, 1% rear windows, 5% windshield strip-Big3 (XSFlex 0ga) -DC Power 270XP -Group 65 NorthStar AGM battery Coming soon/plans: -Build log-Blacked out mirror reflectors-Tinted tails/3rd brake light
RooTxBeeR Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 Holy run on sentences, please use proper puncuation. Helps makes understanding things easier. What is the voltage at the battery, compared to the amp? You said you have big 3 done. What size wire is it? What size wire is the rockford kit you said you are using? Also, what's the size of your stock alt, and the one you said you just replaced it with. rfbasshead Posted January 12, 2015 Author Report Posted January 12, 2015 Ok so it was my power wire. I swapped it out and my voltage is outstanding now. It was really ooxidized where the fuse holder was and it was kinda melted. Why does that happen? When I pulled the wire from under my carpet it looked like it was melting into the metal. I installed a switch to turn the amp off when im not using it becuase its in my truck I use for work and I literally drive it all day long. Why did that happen? Do I need to get a bigger wire?
Miguels Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 resistance got the wire hot.. my brother used some fosgate fuse holders and they melted and couldn't get the fuse out. we replaced it with a cheaper fuse holder that cost $10 and it worked. the fosgate fuse holder had almost no contact area. the cheaper fuse holder had more contact area.. meaning where the wire connects to the fuse holder had almost no metal the cheap fuse had about 3 times more metal my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/
rfbasshead Posted January 14, 2015 Author Report Posted January 14, 2015 So now my voltage at the amp with the car on is 13.7-13.9. Should I always be at 14? Or as long as I don't go below 12 I'm ok?
