Gustav Gutta Persson Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Hello, I have 4 batteries going to one positive steel bar and one negativ steel bar. And now im going to replace them to aluminum. And wonder how thick/long this have to be to handle about 1 000 ampere. And wonder if there is some way i can calculate on how big they have to be
Bump4life Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 follow chart. for dc power you are concerned with cross sectional area to determine current capabilities http://www.wmwa.net/metal-products/aluminum/aluminum-bar/ Buyer/Seller Feedback Thread: http://www.stevemead...5015-bump4life/ MB C220 153 Trunk Car Build Log: http://www.stevemead...d/#entry1840136 MB C280 Ipad Dash SQ Build Log: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/194484-bump4lifes-new-benz-tony-c-relay-kit-pictures-ce-electric-audison-front-stage-installed/ My SPL Log: http://www.stevemead...__fromsearch__1 BMW M340 xDrive Stock, for now. Gustav Gutta Persson Posted January 27, 2015 Author Report Posted January 27, 2015 ok so say 5" diameter, but how do I know how thick need to be?
Bump4life Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 you are making bus bars for batteries right? length is whatever you need to link the batteries. if you are designing for 1000 amps, according to the chart i posted, you are gunna want 1/2 inch thick and 3 inches wide. That is "rated" for 1000 amps continuous. if you can juice 1000 amps continous , id be impressed. Gustav Gutta Persson Posted January 27, 2015 Author Report Posted January 27, 2015 everything is fused to like 950amp so im counting high for safty and for fun
bmxscion Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 I used a 1/2" wide 6061 flat bar for a quick little bar to connect this on a friends car today. This car will only have a 500W amp and a single 12" RF HE2 sub and Pioneer HU added to an otherwise stock system. Did big 3 with 4AWG wire first though. He wanted to be able to return the car's electrical back to full stock so this is what I came up with. TaylorFade Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 IIRC... aluminum is rated for 700A per 1 square inch of cross section. Copper, btw, is 1,000A.
