Guest Posted February 2, 2015 Report Posted February 2, 2015 Is a woofer cone composed of polypropylene a good or bad material? I know it is pretty common, but how does it fair compared to paper or other material types?

I find it hard to believe that manufacturers use about 50 different types of materials for cones if it doesn't matter what they're made of and it wouldn't effect the sound. Maybe it doesn't matter as MUCH in a sub as a woofer thats made to produce more of the freq. spectrum.
SQL50 Posted February 2, 2015 Report Posted February 2, 2015 Different companies use different materials, because they may prefer a certain material over another because they believe that the strength of that particular material is efficient for the sub that their making. Material still doesn't change the tone or sound of the woofer, in the low frequency spectrum which a sub produces.

SQL50 Posted February 2, 2015 Report Posted February 2, 2015 Let me explain in a little more detail. You have a brand that produces a line of subs. Their A line of subs has a certain basket, motors, leads, spiders, cooling etc etc and then they have a choice of which cone material they want to run. Lets say they want polypropylene for Line A. Lets say Line B had different baskets, motors, leads, spiders, cooling etc etc and they want pressed paper cones for that line. Will both lines sound different? Absolutely. But lets say with Line A's specs vs The polypropylene cone vs the pressed paper cone within the same line, you would not notice a tonal difference at all. Same with Line B.
