aculous Posted February 2, 2015 Report Posted February 2, 2015 Different companies use different materials, because they may prefer a certain material over another because they believe that the strength of that particular material is efficient for the sub that their making. Material still doesn't change the tone or sound of the woofer, in the low frequency spectrum which a sub produces. bullshit. Cone material matters because it goes into weight and stiffness...which effects the efficiency of the woofer and "accuracy" which usually is more of a measure of how well the cone resists things like deformation under load. As well as the compliance of the spider and the motor. Taylor or OP whichever you prefer. Polypropelene is fine, its a standard material for woofer cones. I would just stay away from untreated paper cones for car audio and then just look at the specs. That will tell you more about whether the woofer is going to work in your applications. Don't really worry about the cone material.

The reason I asked is because I was wondering how decent the JBL GTO subs are; they use a polypropylene woofer; I battled with the idea of running 4 of the 10" or maybe 12" ones if I could fit them. But it is hard to persuade me to change from running a pair of 12" AA Chaos...idk...first world probs right lol
aculous Posted February 2, 2015 Report Posted February 2, 2015 Let me explain in a little more detail. You have a brand that produces a line of subs. Their A line of subs has a certain basket, motors, leads, spiders, cooling etc etc and then they have a choice of which cone material they want to run. Lets say they want polypropylene for Line A. Lets say Line B had different baskets, motors, leads, spiders, cooling etc etc and they want pressed paper cones for that line. Will both lines sound different? Absolutely. But lets say with Line A's specs vs The polypropylene cone vs the pressed paper cone within the same line, you would not notice a tonal difference at all. Same with Line B. this makes more sense. But cone material is going to effect how the woofer performs. It will matter. Just not to a huge extent.

Depends on what you listen to and how you're setup. JBLs will be fine but if you really want to beat on the subs the AAs/Fi/PSI/Sundown will last longer and perform better.

But I would only be able to wire down to 1.5ohms. So I would have to get another amp down the road... The AAs are cheaper and I could instantly wire to 0.5ohm
