Will a 15 inch sub work in a coupe?

If you do ported, make sure you leave at a minimum the width of the port open between the port and the wall it will be loading off of (if firing into the trunk or port firing up).

There is really no way to answer this.

It comes down to if you have the giving room in the trunk/hatch/cargo area/etc to fit specific woofer based on its box requirements.

Sometimes the room is easily available in the trunk for a specific woofer, however the opening is not big enough to fit the box in which requires building the box inside the trunk.

The size of the car has no effect on the size of the woofer you use.

You can put a 8inch a big Chevy Suburban, or you could put a 18inch in a smart car as long as you have the room needed for the proper size enclosure that is usually recommended by the manufacture.

While we are at it, a 18inch woofer doesn't only play low bass, and a 10inch woofer doesn't just play high bass, they can generally play which ever frequencies wanted, but it will be dependent of the box design and its tuning.

yes the box must be built inside the trunk because the mouth of the trunk is so small the max height i can get in there is 11 inches..

i can prob squeeze just over 4 mmmmaybe close to 5 cubes out of that trunk once the spare tire and jack is removed. which should be enough for a 1 15zv3

Now that u have confirmed that the size of the sub and the size of the car has no relation, then i can rest easy knowing it will sound proper.

I was told before that the length of the car in a coupe is smaller and the soundwaves coming from a 15 require a longer car and greater distance in order to sound good,. Hence why i was told to go with a 10 or 12 as the distance for soundwaves from those subs dont require a great distance.

The only thing now i have to worry about is sub and port placement... and how much RMS to give the zv3 daily.. im thinking 2000-2500?

How sound waves travel depends on the tuning of the box not the size of the woofer.

im doing ported, just havent decided on the sub and port placement/direction. I want to get as much cabin gain as possible and also feel the bass as much as possible too.

So far with my sealed box, having the subs aimed backwards a few inches away from the trunk has sounded best.

the last thing i want to do is pay 400 bucks to have the box built inside the trunk and then not have it sound that good due to sub/port placement and then have to destroy it and pay to have it built all over again.

If you're going to have to build it in the trunk then you might as well build it firing into the cabin instead of the trunk, and sealed off from the trunk entirely. No trunk rattle

that was the plan, there are only 2 ways to do that. The first is firing the subs and port into the cabin and sealing off the trunk. This way is not doable because for starters, the seats always have to be folded down, so if someone sits in the back the seats go up and i wont be able to listen to music as the sub would be pushed right against the seat and would not be able to move. Secondly, the opening when the seats are folded down is so small it is really meant for a couple of 8 inch woofers. A 15 would never be able to clear that space without cutting a good portion of metal.. which looks like support metal so that would compromise the structural integrity of the car for sure.. so thats a no no.

the only other option is to fire the sub and port up through the rear deck and seal off the trunk. this method would have the sub and port just 1-3 inches away from the rear window. This is the way my installer/sundown dealer were planning on doing it. The only problem is that i have no idea if the direction of the sub and port aiming this way will create the same feeling as to when i have the subs facing the rear a few inches away from the trunk (how my sealed box is now). However a huge plus to doing the sub and port up through rear deck is that yes no more trunk rattle but also... i can drive around with my seats up all the time, every time! now i can fit my groceries, miniature girls and friends, and nieces and nephews.

Without testing both methods (firing through the deck versus firing into the trunk lid/rear) then there's no way of saying which one you will like better. But I feel that any time you don't have trunk rattle the better, just my preference. It's an awful noise that makes me disgusted every time I here it in someone else's car. But if space is a limiting factor, you don't have to go with a 15. You may not need it right now, but one day you might want a little of that trunk space that the 15 is taking up. Smaller subs can be just as loud as long as the enclosure is built around the subs and the space you have available. It's better to measure how much space you want to use first, make your sub purchase based on that (don't forget to include amp/battery rack space too).

everythings done.. the 15 has already been ordered and is being made. My dealer/installer friend kept pushing me to do the 1 15. the box, battery and amps will take up the entire trunk. Im OK with that though.

I just need to figure out if im aiming it backwards or up through deck

only way to know which is best is to try each

ya.. i wish there was a program that could predict the best suited direction based on the model of your car. It would save a lot of time and money.

Because potentially what could happen is this:

I pay 400 or more to build the box facing the rear, then either curiosity or strong convincing makes me scrap that build and then pay another 600 to build it with sub and port going through rear deck and sealed off. Then, after thats built, i could like the way it was in the beginning when it was facing the rear and then re-do that build for another 400.

thats the worst case scenario or course and something im praying wont have to happen.
