akuma4u Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 Hey I was told that 10s, and 12s, work best in smaller cars and coupes and 15s and 18s are better for SUVs and bigger cars. Is this true? Im asking because i just bought a 15 inch for my coupe (trunk not hatchback) and dont know if that was a wise idea.. should i downgrade to a 12? its a 15 zv3 if anyone is curious and will be run ported someone with knowledge of sound waves and the distance they need to travel etc please chime in.. thank you

audiofanaticz Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 There is really no way to answer this.It comes down to if you have the giving room in the trunk/hatch/cargo area/etc to fit specific woofer based on its box requirements. Sometimes the room is easily available in the trunk for a specific woofer, however the opening is not big enough to fit the box in which requires building the box inside the trunk. The size of the car has no effect on the size of the woofer you use. You can put a 8inch a big Chevy Suburban, or you could put a 18inch in a smart car as long as you have the room needed for the proper size enclosure that is usually recommended by the manufacture. While we are at it, a 18inch woofer doesn't only play low bass, and a 10inch woofer doesn't just play high bass, they can generally play which ever frequencies wanted, but it will be dependent of the box design and its tuning.

I was told before that the length of the car in a coupe is smaller and the soundwaves coming from a 15 require a longer car and greater distance in order to sound good,. Hence why i was told to go with a 10 or 12 as the distance for soundwaves from those subs dont require a great distance. The only thing now i have to worry about is sub and port placement... and how much RMS to give the zv3 daily.. im thinking 2000-2500?
Miguels Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 Is the trunk 11 inches tall or is it just the trunk opening? If your trunk is 11 tall there is no way you can get a 15 in there my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/

If your trunk is 11 tall there is no way you can get a 15 in there no just the trunk opening, so thats why i said the box for the 15 will have to be built inside the trunk. I just dont know whether to have sub and port facing rear, sub rear and port up through rear deck, sub rear and port forward, sub and port up through rear deck.. etc right now i have my 2 jl 12 w3s facing the rear about 4-5 inches away from the trunk latch and out of all the positions ive tried, it sounds best at that position. That is a sealed box mind you.

Joe X Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 I wouldn't pay any attention to what dealers or random people have to say. Every vehicle is different and that's the bottom line.
