Kade
Does anyone have any experience with dovetail joints and the tools used to make them? What do you use and where do you recommend I start? I'd like to make an enclosure with those joints. 2009 Dodge Caliber SXT (Silver) Deck: Pioneer X3600BHS Amps: RF P1000X5 Front: RF P16-S Rear: RF P1694 Subs: 1 RF P3D2-10 Cabling: Stinger 6 channel RCA, RF 4gauge kit, SkyHighCarAudio 16gauge speaker wire. Kade
Buy a dovetail jig from portercable and a strong 1/2 shank router. I've looked at those and the jig from harborfreight. I'm just not sure if there's more to it than just clamping down the wood and running the router over the template. What wood are you going to use? Probably birch. This is for an instrument cabinet. I'd probably use something different for a subwoofer cabinet. 2009 Dodge Caliber SXT (Silver) Deck: Pioneer X3600BHS Amps: RF P1000X5 Front: RF P16-S Rear: RF P1694 Subs: 1 RF P3D2-10 Cabling: Stinger 6 channel RCA, RF 4gauge kit, SkyHighCarAudio 16gauge speaker wire. Triticum Agricolam
Well I'm glad to hear you aren't going to use MDF or something :-) If you want something easier to make you could just do a box joint. With modern wood glues dovetail joints have no strength advantages. Kade
lol yea. I know a little bit about tone woods and what not. I was just on youtube and seen people making their own box joint jigs, I may try that. Box joint jigs are just as expensive as the dovetails. 2009 Dodge Caliber SXT (Silver) Deck: Pioneer X3600BHS Amps: RF P1000X5 Front: RF P16-S Rear: RF P1694 Subs: 1 RF P3D2-10 Cabling: Stinger 6 channel RCA, RF 4gauge kit, SkyHighCarAudio 16gauge speaker wire. Bob Tzimenatos
I am a cabinetmaker by trade- I build high end custom kitchens from scratch. Dovetail joints are an art. There are a bunch of different jigs on the market, but the expense may not be worth it for one or two projects. You can successfully make dovetails with the appropriate router bits, a set of good, sharp chisels, meticulous layout and a bit of patience.
