Wicks
Here we go The tear down. Should be easy right First, here's a screen shot from an Orion brochure. I think this is for a 1st Gen, but the ratings should be the same: 50W x 2 I'm guessing we'll be able to hit that.... Let's take a tour around this beast: Orion had their own wire running into the amp. Notice no terminals, wire runs right to the board. Seen a lot of people over time clip these wires so there is just a little stub hanging out the end of the amp... Wicks
The amp has been "repaired" before. Looks like we have a loose lead on this cap. Both large Nichicon 3300uF 50V caps are bulged, not good. Odd for a good quality cap like Nichicon to bulge. Might have been overheated. Don't see this anymore...... Wicks
Pulled the board, here's the underside. Notice the Philips head screw on the right side (positive power wire connection). Very discolored with some gunk around the screw. Not a good connection, extra resistance lead to some heat damage. Now to get this brace bar off of the FETs...................... Not playing nice. Had to use a flat screwdriver and pry the FETs off, some didn't make it... The foam used in padding the bar from the FETs has literally glued itself to the FETs. Here's where it gets interesting. Had to bring out the utility knife and pry the FETs off. ....finally Onto the other side. Wicks
Check out these HUGE rectifying diodes on the bottom of the board... Now with all that foam gunk on the FETs, I had to scrape it off carefully to be able to read the part markings on all the silicon around the amp. I don't have a parts list or schematics on this one so I need the part markings to know what the component is and what to get as a replacement. Using my iPhone to take a picture of a scraped off FET through a microscope to see the part number. This part in particular is an LM337T, which is an adjustable negative voltage regulator. Probably providing a negative supply voltage for some Op-amps on the broad which usually need +15V and -15V. Here's something interesting... Take another look at this picture: Focus on the right side, that's the power supply section. If you follow those FETs around the section and count them up..............18 This amp is rated at 50W x 2. My previous Punch200 that I refurb'd was rated at 100W x 2 and only had 4 PSU FETs.......TOTAL. This under-rated beast has 18... This refurb should be fun This post sent with 100% recycled electrons. 2004 BMW M3Mechman 280A 2 - XS Power XP30001 - XS Power D375 500F of Maxwell SuperCaps (soon to be 1000F) iPadMini2Dash mounted O-scopeAudison bitOne (Remote DRC MP) Highs Amp - PPI Art A404 Hertz HSK130 (HSK165 waiting...)
