Robert North Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 I have 4ga running to my sub amp but getting ready to upgrade to 1ga. 1. Can i add the 1ga to the 4ga and fuse them together or just run the 1ga without the 4ga.
Skullz Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 You can as long as you do not exceed the limits of the 4 ga., but it would be better to make a complete run from front to back with a single run. 01 Ford focus ZX3 Pioneer AVH-X491BHS PPI PC 4800.2 Morel Maximo 6.5" x2
Bayuk89 Posted February 6, 2016 Report Posted February 6, 2016 Agreed with skullz, remove ur current 4ga and replace with the 1/0 ur gonna buy. Keeping ur 4ga is NOT gonna benefit you in anyway. I would personally use 1/0 welding cable its 100% OFC and is tested and designed for heavy current loads and meets industrial standards and is rated for X amount of current at X amount of feet and cheaper than car audio power wire. If you use 1/0 for ur amp power wire u need use 1/0 for ur ground wire too. What kinda amp are you using ?
Jhunt94 Posted February 6, 2016 Report Posted February 6, 2016 You can buy quality 1/0 wire pretty cheap nowadays, so I would just put a complete new run instead of trying to combine the two. As for what Bayuk said, Idk about that. Last time I checked welding wire was a little more expensive than brands such as SHCA, Knu, etc. 2007 Ford F-150 Reg. Cab. askmeaboutmy6.5s Posted February 6, 2016 Report Posted February 6, 2016 KEEP your current 4 gauge. run a full run of 0g with its own fuse.use the 0g for the sub amp. remove the fust for the 4g wire(so that it wont have power on it) and save it if you plan to run a 4 channel Follow Seth Sharer Designs on Facebook for more frequent updates! Bayuk89 Posted February 6, 2016 Report Posted February 6, 2016 1/0 KnuKonceptz OFC $3.50 a foot 1/0 sky high OFC $3.64 a foot 1/0 royal excelence welding cable $1.64 a foot Thats if ur doing OFC wire (all i do) Or u have CCA wire if u want that ? 1/0 sky high CCA wire $2.31 a foot Still more expensive than welding cable Wire SHOULD be based on how big ur amp is because if u only have a 2k amp there is NO need for 1/0 because there WONT be any improvement over your 4ga u already have
Bayuk89 Posted February 6, 2016 Report Posted February 6, 2016 Im only running a 1500 watt sub amp pushing two 15's @1 ohm and im running 2ga welding cable, its more than adequte for this current set up. And remember you need to fuse LESS than wire rating. U run 1/0 welding cable rated at 400 amps out to 25ft u need to fuse about 200-250 so in event of amperage spike or wire shorting out ur fuse pops before ur wire melts. Even if ur fuse is rated at 200 its gonna take 230-260 (or more) amps for X amount of time for it to pop automotive fuses are typicly a "slow blow" i personally fuse 10-100 amps lower on power wire than my amp fuse (depending on my amp) (my current amp has 175 amp fuse and my power wire has a 150 amp ANL fuse) if this lil 1500 watt amp pulls more than 150 amps there IS a problem lol but to each its own, i rather pop a $2 fuse and save my car and equipment than fuse too high and alow an electrical fire
