audiofanaticz Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Great subs right there!! I built some custom SA-18s before they were ever a much of a thing and only a handful of people seemed to have them. Curious how these stack up against the old styles!
Bayuk89 Posted March 17, 2016 Author Report Posted March 17, 2016 Audiofanaticz mine are the Rev2 version. How much support is there for reconing this sub ? Its got a 2.5 inch coil that sounds limiting for drop ins on an 18" the cone replacements i seen online are for 3-4" coil for 18" subs. If they fail i wanna beef them up with better parts, just curious on support due to the coil being small on a big cone.
audiofanaticz Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 The woofers cone size really has nothing to do with the coil size. It is a much lighter in weight cone however compared to something like a zv4 18 cone, and it has a much thinner actual thickness surround (very similar to the obsidian audio woofers). I know sundown did have SPL coils for the SA series which are aluminum flatwound coils instead of the copper round wire coils. Im not sure which coil Sundown is using in these production runs. The 4 18s I had are bassed off the old stock SA 10-15inch motor with an adapter plate, but used the normal coil that the other SA series did. But if you ever do blow one Sundown does offer these dropin style recones and they are fairly cheap too.Iirc Dave Leib did have some non-Sundown coils made for the SA series, not sure if he has any left though or how they did compared to the stock SA coil, or even the SPL SA coil. I had 4 of these 18s running on an Atomic 7000.1D and they took it fine in my buddies truck I also had them in my 6th order for a while too on a single saz-4500, then I went to 2 saz-4500s and they lasted a while but one day I really started hammering on them playing some really low lows and slinkied a coil on each sub closest to the port (probably unloaded them pretty bad)..
hdorre Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Iirc Dave Leib did have some non-Sundown coils made for the SA series, not sure if he has any left though or how they did compared to the stock SA coiyea, Dave still carries those coils and uses them very frequently. Hes 4 miles from me, and he showed me them one time i went by the shop. They skullfuck stock coils. They're the black high-temp coils from Precision Econowind. funny enough, one of his employees dads works for PE. Anyway... he rates "his" SAs at 1200, which is comical. He's done testing with them on up to 5kwrms. Bayuk89 Posted March 17, 2016 Author Report Posted March 17, 2016 Thanks audiofanaticz and hdorre. Im glade there is support for these subs with 2.5" coil's. I hope i get many years out of these SA's. On the fixmyspeaker.com website i didnt see any replacement cones in 18" with 2.5" coil holes, they were 18" in 3" and 4" coil holes thats why i was concerned. Im gonna run them at proper wattage and in a year or so i will recone them with better/stronger coils and softparts.
