aBav20 Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 I apologize in advance to anybody who keeps seeing my posts about problems when setting my gain. I decided to set my gains with a DMM since that is all I have access to at the moment besides my ears. When I do it I feel my results are inaccurate. The preouts on my head unit are 2v. My target voltage is reached well before the 2v mark on my amp. The first time I calculated it I had my sub control output on +6 which is the max and I reached about 4v when I hit my target voltage on the DMM. I tried it with my sub output at 0 and I managed to get up to 2.5v but I still feel that is way off since my preouts are rated at 2v. I set everything to flat or zero on the deck and turned my SSF all the way down and my LPF all the way up on the amp when I did this. The kicker... I played the test tone off my phone from a Bluetooth signal. Is that the reason why my results are skewed? I used a 40 hz test tone as well. Should I be using a 50 or 60 hz test tone? Any input is appreciated.
meade916 Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 It is off because it doesn't work. Just turn it up until it sounds "good" to you... until you are ready to do it right. A DMM is a complete waste of time for setting gains. All SMD products + MORE available at my store here! https://wccaraudio.com/ Subscribe to My Youtube Channel! Over 1,000,000 subscribers strong! aBav20 Posted April 1, 2016 Author Report Posted April 1, 2016 Okay I'm trying to find a place that has the equipment to set it right. Would setting the gain at 2v to match my 2v preouts be a safe bet in the meantime? By safe I mean to avoid clipping. I will also keep the sub output at zero as well until I use the right equipment
MotorCityFats13 Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 people use a 40hz because I hear that is the most impact frequency to the human ear... and a DMM will give askew-ed reading hence why people try not to do this.... on my avh4800 my amp "BE1700.1D" gets way beyond the voltage ac from my amp with the gains all the way down with less than 1/2 volume for a target of 1200rms so i cant even begin to use this method... with a 900rms sub and a dyno proven 1700rms amp and 4v preouts it tops out very quickly.... the only way I can ever see setting my system is with a AMM-1

aBav20 Posted April 1, 2016 Author Report Posted April 1, 2016 Holy sh*t did the actual Steve Meade reply to my post? I am honored. I was looking into getting one of your DD-1 devices because I love car audio and I don't want to be in the noob category anymore.
ShadeTreeMechanic Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 If you plan on banging on your system then you will have a system that is banged on. The user is responsible for using the volume control correctly. If you cannot measure distortion then you have no way of knowing what is happening when you crank it. The DD-1 is the way to go. Find a shop with a DD-1 or someone local to you that can help. Until then go easy on it. 91 C350 Centurion conversion ( Four Door One Ton Bronco) 250A Alternator (Second Alternator Coming Soon) G65 AGM Up Front / Two G31 AGM in Back Pioneer 80PRS CT Sounds AT125.2 / CT Sounds 6.5 Strato Pro component Front Stage CT Sounds AT125.2 / Lanzar Pro 8" coax w/compression horn tweeter Rear Fill FSD 5000D 1/2 ohm (SoundQubed 7k Coming Soon) Two HDS315 Four Qubes Each 34hz (Two HDC3.118 and New Box Coming Soon)
MotorCityFats13 Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 just remember that a dd1 can only tell you the highest undistorted volume.... if you have too much power on tap then you still have to turn it down and once again you are guessing....in my opinion and maybe not worth much here the best SMD tool is the AMM-1 although it costs way more than a dd1 it does more than 1 thing.... im still saving up to buy mine..... $400 is still quite a ways out of my reach
