Derek217 Posted December 4, 2016 Report Posted December 4, 2016 I have a 07 Suburban and want to start building a 5k watt system. How much amperage would I need to run a good charge for 5k for a daily driver? Would it be optimal to achieve that on (2) 240a Alts and can they be ran together at home or would I have to pay a mechanic to do it? I've only seen tahoes ran with two alts, never suburbans. 07 Chevy Suburban Lifted Ground Pounder Build In Progress Clarion NX706
hdorre Posted December 4, 2016 Report Posted December 4, 2016 A single HO alt (270A or so) and 2-3 G31s (depending on 1/2 1 or 1 ohm) would be fine. Im guessing you have the 5.3L engine? The same alt brackets that the Tahoes use work on your engine. Rich Schenk Posted December 4, 2016 Report Posted December 4, 2016 Get a good 300+ six phase hairpin alt (singer, Mechman, DC) That does 200+ idle biggest xs power battery Underhood 2-4 d3100s in the back and you should be good. I have in my Mountainer singer 340 d3400 and 4 d3100s on dc5k and 2 mids and high amps and voltage stays in 14s lowest is high13s at full tilt and mine is daily driver. Derek217 Posted December 4, 2016 Author Report Posted December 4, 2016 I'm not sure what liter it is unfortunately. LTZ with a vortec in it. I see mechman 240a for $350 and some 370a for $700. Should I try for 2 240a, 1 370, or inquire on singer or other alternators? Might try 10k down the road...if that changes what alt might help later down the road. Just a thought. Would a mechanic have to install one or two alts? If so how much? 07 Chevy Suburban Lifted Ground Pounder Build In Progress Clarion NX706
omg_spoon Posted December 4, 2016 Report Posted December 4, 2016 i had 5k on a 320 alt. 2 d3100s and a d3400 at 1500 rpms+ it would do fine, maybe low 12s at the lowest 98 Mustang GTSinger 3202 12" Incriminator Death Penalties1 SAZ-2500dv22 D3100,1 D34002 Crescendo CZ-65SAX-100.2Door panels by Diablo Kustomz
BEEKAY Posted December 4, 2016 Report Posted December 4, 2016 I'm running 5k on stock alt with 5 batteries right now and can't see below 12.6 full tilt at idle. It's low to mid 13s at around 2k RPM. Before my Singer 300 took a shit I never saw below 13.2ish at idle and always mid 13s to low 14s at 2k RPM on a single 5k at 1 ohm. However the more alternator power the better! Leaves room for power upgrades in the future.
Karkov Posted December 4, 2016 Report Posted December 4, 2016 If you only replace stock alt then you will hot charge at 13.8 and can't add additional grounds. Look up PCM controlled alts. and 2005+ GM ground sensor. If you run two alts then leave the stock one completely alone, don't touch stock wires AT ALL, and just run two separate charging systems. That's what i do for a higher hot charge voltage. Suburban's are same as Tahoe's for brackets. 2007 Subby LTZ is 5.3l If you are not on mobile go to my build log and find where i did my electrical. 2007 Chevy Tahoe (SOLD) 12 ~ FI Audio X series 10" w/BP option 2 ~ DC Audio 5.0K @0.67 3 ~ DC Audio 5.0K @1.0 2 ~ PPI 3 way sets (not installed yet) 1 ~ RF T400-4, 1 ~ RF T600-2, 1 ~ RF T600-4 4 ~ CT Sounds 5.25" Strato comps (rear fill only) 1 ~ XS Power D4800 1 ~ XS Power D3400 8 ~ XS Power XP3000 160 stock alt, Mechman 370 Elite, 185 DC Power 320+ Sq. Derek217 Posted December 5, 2016 Author Report Posted December 5, 2016 If that's the case, I think it'd be in my best interest to run 2 240a alts as a separate system...also found out since I just bought this truck that I have a second battery basket near the open space in my engine. Should work out ok. Shop in town said I would need to get a mechanic to wire two alts together though. I'll upload a few pics once I figure out how to on the mobile 07 Chevy Suburban Lifted Ground Pounder Build In Progress Clarion NX706
