HVAC guys chime in please

So there is a debate about running your furnace in auto or on.

my house is older, storm windows and wooden style windows and wood siding. its a little bit drafty but not bad. we have central heat and air.

my furnace is in the basement and the temp there stays fairly stable. Im curious if the cost of running the fan in on and just using the basement air to help regulate the temp would be better than trying to keep up with the normal drafty-ness of an older home?

winter here has been pretty mild but its like 0°f right now.

It might help a little. I used to turn the blower on without the furnace when we would burn the wood stove and it seemed to help even out the areas of the house a little.

Unless your cold air return is in your basement leaving the fan set to on isn't going to help circulate the basement air throughout your house

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

the furnace filter is in the basement, is that different?

No difference.

What Broke means is your furnace puts hot air throughout your house, in return it sucks out cold(ish) air from cold air return vents through out your house. Those vents are typically on the opposite side of the room as your heat register(s) or one on each end of your house.

So when you run your blower motor on all the time without the heat, it is just taking the heat from your warm rooms and sucking it down to the furnace and back out the vents.
Your furnace filter is between your cold air return ducting and your furnace. The hot air coming out of the furnace is not filtered, only the cold air coming into it.
But since the cold air returns are often from your first floor, you will not be getting any of the warmer basement temperatures by leaving it running.

If your house is drafty, it may make it more drafty leaving it on.

Odd to have cold air returns on the ceiling since hot air rises, they are normally lower.
Though it doesnt matter to much if the air is warm or cold. The main point of the cold air return is to give the furnace an intake of air, otherwise the blower motor struggles if it is starving for air.
Plus they help circulate the air in the home.

Funny thing is I just fixed a furnace today.

The limit switch kept tripping due to not enough air intake, the furnace was running hotter than it should due to the blower not being able to freely move enough air through the heating elements causing them to run hot and trip the switch after only a few minutes of run time.
Similar to what happens if you cover up your intake on your vehicle, the motor starts to suffocate until it dies out.
