14V Battery - Just how much does this help your electrical system

Recommended Posts

So I am looking at XS batteries and caps, and I was wondering...

Just how much does a 14v battery assist your electrical system?  I am talking about replacing starting battery with 14v.

Does your alternator do less work keeping these batteries at 14v?  Less voltage drop in overall system?

Or if anyone is running one as a second battery, I am curious to hear your results as well.

I have the stock battery under the hood and have a Reikken Energie PB1600 near my amps and it makes a big difference, the system does not make the headlights or any lights flash like they kinda used to and the amps are never hot hot, they are luke warm or so to the touch after an hours play at about lvl 30/35 or so volume.

And my voltage meter is usually at 13-14v rarely does it drop to 12v.

A 14v battery would need a 16v alternator in order for it to charge. Your current system runs at 14+v anyway. Money is better spent on a bigger 12v amp.

Good to know.  The PB1600 is a 12v battery right?

I wonder if a 14v would provide any additional benefit?

Well Energie is Reikken and they are not a well known brand like XS Power or Stinger, and i actually have no issues pushing my JBL GTO 1001EZ & Alpine MRP-F240.  odd part is i paid like $120 or so for my battery and Reikken on there site says $300.

- So the 14v batts require a 16v alternator.  Got it.

- Thanks for the link I'll check them out.

don't for get your vehicles electronics may not be compatible with the higher voltage so you might need something to bring the voltage down to 14v for the safety of the vehicles electronics

I think I'll just invest in an amp with better output at 12v so I don't need all the extra current.  I just wish the Crescendos were a bit less expensive.
