Triticum Agricolam
My wife and I are giving our living room a facelift. In the past I've had whatever sub I felt like at the time in that room. Unfortunately that isn't going to work with my wife going forward, now she wants end tables in there instead. I told her I could make subs that look like end tables, so that's what we are going to do. For these subs I need to get the most out of a small space, and I want to be able to play pretty low for good sound effects on movies. The design I came up with uses a down firing Dayton Audio RSS265HO-4 10" subs in 1.4 cu ft net volume, tuned to 22 hz. Eventually I plan on powering these with a Behringer nu3000DSP, so the subs will be seeing about 600 watts a piece. Tuning the box to 22 hz while having enough port area to avoid port noise would result in a REALLY long port (like 80") so instead I'm going to use a PSI 12" passive radiator firing out the back. Here is the design I came up with: My wife wants it to be painted white, so that's what I'm going to do. The flat panels will be 3/4" MDF since its easier to paint. The side rails and top will be baltic birch for better water and dent resistance. Triticum Agricolam
Here are some pics of my build progress: These passive radiators aren't cheap, but PSI is just about the only game in town for this kind of thing. The look to be very well made. Time to cut some holes. This hole is in the back of the enclosure for the PR. The subs will be downfiring. Triticum Agricolam
Made some progress on these. Four of the mounting holes for the PR are right on the joint between the back and side panels, that's no good so something will need to be done. If they were more into the edge of the side panels it wouldn't be much better since edge grain MDF is crap at holding screws. To fix this I drilled out the four offending screws holes to 3/8" I then glue short pieces of 3/8" dowel into the holes. After the glue dries, the dowels are cut flush and the mounting screw holes re-drilled. I won't have any problem with these holding screws now. Triticum Agricolam
The "box" part of these is pretty much done, time to attached the legs and trim pieces.
