Dogs are just hard to photograph cause they are well, dogs. And every minute is playtime usually, so I would imagine you just gotta be quick and use digital so you can waste memory on less than stellar shots trying to get good ones. Hell my mini daschund puppy still wont lemme take a good shot of her. every time I lay on the floor with the camera she runs up to it and licks it or tries to bite my fingers. she just wont sit still...
