David Posted November 30, 2007 Author Report Posted November 30, 2007 ohhh nooo not all steel, just a steel cage so to speak, it will have mdf inside and out possibly baltic birch. have you ever seen how an extreme car is built? they weld in a steel cage so the car cannot flex do all kinds of crazy shit 2 " acrilyc windows. I wont be going that crazy ( cuz I do wanna be able to drive it) in my build, most of the roof and about 18" from the b-pillar to the trunk wall will be al steel tube and angle iron cage, I will see if I can draw up a pic of what I have in my head. the reason I am doing the roof is becuase I have that sunroof, Im sealing it up from the inside, I welded in some brackets and bolted the sunroof in so it cant open painted it black. so from the outside it apears stock but inside it will be gone Iwant to weld in some support pieces to help keep it from flexxing to badly, its gonna be crazy.
LSN2meBoom916 Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 Dude I think i already know exactly what ur talkin bout. The way they do the extreme van windows/ ala GP2K2 also- weld in some steel "L" framing and drill bolt holes for the thick ass plexi/BP glass. I can see you doin THAT as the frame and using THICK wood or mult layers to fill the flat panels/gaps and then glass up the inside and all thread em sumpin fierce throughout. I thought about doin sumpin like that b4 as an "extreme" vehicle that could be put back to stock. Build ur crazy cage setup and box it in and leave an inch or so to slide it in and out and just make a hella strong seal/gasket/build between the front of the enclosure and the side of the vehicle. I see in ur case it'll be permenant but... Are we on the same page? David Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 just purchased some 1" steel square stock and some flux core wire, so hopefully in the next few days I can start some welding, pics tomorrow. 20 bucks for a 20 foot stick of 1" sqaure stock, I was kinda surprized it was so cheap I figured it would be alot more than that, I only picked up one stick for now, I will need about 9 more sticks if I calced it right, cant wait to get started.
no0b4lif3 Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 sounds like fun, never flux cored b4 so i dont know exactly how its done, i work at a metals shop and i think we get 1 inch square for pretty cheap, not sure exatly how much, but i know at time we order it a mile at a time.. and get it even cheaper.
David Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 nope, not yet, hopefully they will be on in time for AutoRama. flux core is just the type of wire Im using supposedly you dont neeed shielding gas with it but it still leaves some nasty slag, the weather has been horrible here as soon as I get alil sunshine I will get in the car and start welding.
