Box Building Questons

I will eventually be building a box for my two Mach 5 SPL-12s in a blowthrough.

I've never built a box before. I'm not sure what thickness of MDF I will use, or if I will use MDF. It'll be 3/4" or 1" I'm guessing.

I know at Rona I couldn't get 1" MDF, only 3/4" and it was about $38 a sheet I think.

So, keeping the fact in mind that I've never built a box, what would be the most straightforward, and bulletproof ways to build one? I see some of you guys do not use screws at all.

I'm not sure if I want to spend the time pre-drilling every hole. Can I use self tapping screws?

My box will be double baffle I'm pretty sure.

What do you guys use to seal the box up inside? Silicone? Glue?

What about covering the box? My box will be in a blowthrough but I have a fiberglass camper shell to cover my bed. I'm liking the Fleckstone stuff, is there any preperations you need to do to MDF to apply it?

Do you have to spray on some sort of sealer to the MDF when the box is done?

I haven't decided on any box plans yet.

I have to pull the bed off and re-align it, and I don't have amps/batteries yet, so it won't be going in my truck for a while. But If I figure out the cut out diemensions, I could build the box.

I'm also looking for any information that will help me.

My dad has some tools I can use to make the box.

* Router (not sure of any details)

* Table Saw

* Compound Mitre Saw w/laser

* Jig Saw

* Have some clamps

* Belt sanders I think

* Multiple power drills

* Measuring tools, squares, etc.

Is there any other tools I will need?

I'm not sure if I want to spend the time pre-drilling every hole. Can I use self tapping screws? If you want to split ur wood... otherwise predrill 1/4" deeper than screw (usually 2" coarse thread drywall)...If you dont have 10 clamps... glue and screw

My box will be double baffle I'm pretty sure. Good, helps alot with heavy subs like that

What do you guys use to seal the box up inside? Silicone? Glue? The glue used to make the box.... ive never had to use anything more... but if u use silicone use the white bathroom caulk and dont put a sub near it for 24hrs...fumes deteriorate surround sometimes

I'm liking the Fleckstone stuff, is there any preperations you need to do to MDF to apply it?Especially when the mdf will be exposed to the elements u should prime it in a color close to the fleckstone, fleckstone, fleckstone sealant.... that way water wont get in there and swell the mdf

I make boxes with less...lol

Is there any other tools I will need?

maybe some rollers or a friend so when ur cutting up the 4x8 sheet u can handle it better

theres alot of people who can help design a nice box for ya when you get max dimensions desired and amount of power going to them

I dont use anything inside to seal it up but then again i never have gaps or leaks in my boxes, the glue and wood does the job its supposed to do without me having to put caulking on the inside. if you must use something just use wood glue youll already have it and it works just as well as silicone if not better.

primer before using fleckstone always imo.

if this is a first box, find someone in your area with knowledge or experience to help you with the build, as a blowthrough isnt a beginner job by a long shot

Hey James, my boxes have not leaked either, and probably wouldn't, even without any silicone sealent..... But for only $5 or $6 a tube, and 5 minutes of work, why wouldn't you go on and run a quick bead in each of the corners, as a final step ?
