I wouldn't believe that anyone in the United States had never had a Dr. Pepper but I have a brother that lived in Queens for 10 years. The first time I visited him we went to a small diner and when the waiter asked what I wanted to drink and I asked for a Dr. Pepper, he looked at me like an alien sticking out of my head. I had not realized that Dr. Pepper was pretty much a Texas thing. I know that the other states have it but not like it is here. I would suggest trying one.
