Core Duo Proccesor

Recommended Posts

Ok guys. I'm looking to do some upgrades on my computer. I want to up my ram to 4gb, which i can do easily. Also going to give my videoa boost with abut a 7950gt 512mb. Grab up a 250gb 10000rpm hd, and set my 250gb 7200 as a slave. All of which i can do very easily. Now where i am getting lost at, is these stupid dual core processors. I've never ran dual core, and have no idea how they work. I have no pref torwards intel, or AMD. I ahve ran both, and will run either one at this point. My questions are...

If a proc sais it is dual core 2.13, does that mean it is running at 4.26ish, or is it 1.065x2?

Who is runnign the core duo game? Which ones are better?

I want to stay around 250 on the proc, so i'm not looking into the quad core procs. You guys tell me whats up. Give me some suggestinos. I am using LGA775 right now, and would rather not change my mainboard, but i will.

Here is what i am looking at ATM.

Well my shit for some reason runs at 1.0ghz with 960mb of ram, sometimes it runs at 2.0ghz, so it's kinda weird....

Rally saw no difference between my old pc and this one, except for the boot time

Bib, dual core means that you essentially have two operating processors in the same entity. So, to answer your question, if a dual core processor is rated at 2.4 Ghz-this means that EACH core is running at 2.4Ghz. Furthermore, if you are running a multi-threaded application (one which can take advantage of more than one processor), you will see significant performance gains.

Having two processors however, will not necessarily double your speed (but you will see massive gains). You will still have some overhead when the two cores communicate with each other. Also, to see the benefit of dual core, you must have software to support more than one execution of code simultaneously. That you don't have to worry about...all software being released these days are multi-threaded.

Just so you know, that processor is $5.00 cheaper on newegg.com and includes FREE 3 day shipping. So over all you would be saving $10.75.

Someone else in a review said they clocked that cpu to 3.2g.  There are some decent reviews about the cpu on newegg. Seems like its worth it.

I wouldnt go dropping money on 4 gigs of ram, it is overkill and will most likely be overkill for a few years to come. You are better off getting a nice ddr2 2 gig kit (corsair, mushkin, ocz).

And with the money saved from buying only 2 gigs of ram, step up to a nicer motherboard (asus or dfi), maybe and maybe a better power supply, something with dual 12 volt rails and at least 22 amps per rail.

X2 on the 4 gig thing.....go look at my new rig im about to get.  I dropped MAJOR scrilla on it and i could have easily got 4 gigs..even the sales man at Alienware agreed when i told him it was useless right now.  In fact the last cpu i built for chicken has 4 gigs in it  but i was PISSED that it only would post 2 gigs  :ranting2:

Maybe Vista can take advantage or even post 4, i dont know but i can always get 2 more later.

BTW: not to  :hj: but i got the QC 2.66 OTW and it ships today i think!!!!! ok sorry for  :hj: im just excited.  :D

Right now, my RAM is 2.5GB of PC4200 DDR2. It was fine on XP Pro. With vista, it's idle/ing(yea, i know, sp) at around 350mb. then when i start running internet explorer, along with photoshop, and have some voip programs running, i am at around 700mb. OK, throw in a game like BF2 or someething along those lines, when i alt tab out of the game while dead, to do things with the afore mentioned programs, i have to be using every bit of 1.5-2b of ram. which to me, is too close for comfort if i'm using 1.5-2gb of ram, i'd like to have ATLEAST anotheer gig clear if, and i know probobly not, i ever needed it. You can call it overkill, i will call it "added security".

Thanks Dale. That really helped me on the processor, b/c i had no idea.

Audiofanaticz: I'm not really interested in upgrading my mainboard. I have a really nice board. No reson to upgrade it unless my cpu will not interact. Also, i didn't unclude it, but i would be upgrading my power supply aswell. Thanks for the input though. I'll post my board when i get home.

Steve, back to the ftop of this post on the rram thing.  :/ I wonder why chickens rig wouldnt register? i was able to see 2.5gb in xp pro, and vista.
