Want To Learn Something Cool?

Okay, I have a 2 week job working for a company that is doing prototype devices, and it consists of cooling, and heating air, with electricity, and mixing chemicals, etc.

I have been doing the wiring on these units, and I must say its a pain in the ass with all these relays, switches, motors, converting 110ac to 12v dc @60 amps, I have really learned alot in the past week.

One of the coolest devices I have messed with is called a Peltier

What is it is a cooler, or heating element, or a device you can use in place of a solar cell when there is heat present, and not light

This is a transistor that can go up to boiling water temperatures, or below freezing with the flip of a polarity- I think this would be great to use in amps, in fact I will use this in amps. Imagine a constant -100deg directly to your heatsink??!!

Anyways, this is a new device I have learned of, and have been working with, and they are awesome, so if you havent used one, and are in to prototyping, and hobbys, buy a few, and start messing around with them

edit: this is the exact ones we are using I believe, I was told exaggeratedly on the wideness of temp extremes

but -50deg is damn cold

we are using them for 150-200 degree cooling variances, sooooooooooo

those are crazy temps too. should work hella good on some amps.

would it be legal in the lanes to paste these on to the amps outer heat sink to run some amps at extremely low loads?

I just got done looking at these, and I think ill have to try this for cooling duties during the summer

The biggest problem with pelts is that if you can't keep the hot side cool, the cool side will begin to heat up as well. Stock heatsinks on amps probably wouldn't be enough cooling. That and they take quite a bit of power... I almost did a pelt setup on my computer but never got around to it. oh yea... condensation is another issue you have to deal with when using them...

Yup, all a pelt does is create a temperature differential between the hot side and the cold side.

All well and good if you just wanna get it hot but if you wanna get cold you have to cool the hot side.

I messed around with them a bit with computers - with a 70w pelt with ice-water watercooling on the hot side I could get to about -45 celcius on the cold side.

Still really cool toys.

One thing to keep in mind is they draw an assload of current ;/

most amps work best in about 65F. so if they go too low it wont be a good thing.
