Need Advice! How To Get A Job As An Installer?

Recommended Posts

I have a portfolio I take to comps/shows.

Last comp i went to at Norcal customs up on Auburn blvd here in Sac, the owner/manager guy was checking out my car and I was explaining how i did everything on the car and he looked through my portfolio (pretty much all the stuff i have posted here) and he asked if I needed a job. He said I could teach his guys to do custom. hahaha. I was like thanks that'd be great but not till I'm done w/ school.

Oh well. Maybe I'll go seE what's up some day, but i dunno if i wanna go to a shop where the best guy they got....IS ME! plus, them old guys prolly wouldn't take too kindly to being "overseen" or "taught" by a punk ass kid like me hehe.

Side jobs are few and far between but more fun from my POV.

Being the shop bitch isnt that bad, as long as your at the right shop. Just make sure that the person teaching you knows thier shit, otherwise your just in for a longer struggle....

Dude work at a place that is based only on car installation. The guy at best buy who installed my freinds system was retarded. I asked him if he heard of Hifonics....Said no, Asked if he heard of Fi...No, Re....No, T3.....Hell no he said, jbl.....said the company was into home audio only, and asked if he knew kicker......No. I'm like wtf. He was retarded and felt stupid. I was laughing. He knew alpine and rf only. But I was suprised I knew more companies than a installer. But anyways you get help at a install based shop like Amatt or the other guys work at. They will hopefully teach you and it will take a while but need to clean the shop first.

hey, don't hate on best buy

Best buy is probably the best possible place for a new installer to work at. They provide a great place to get expereince tearing apart almost every kind of car and they have THE best tech support line there is. The 8 guys who are on the tech line are mostly master installers, and they help write the MECP tests.

I understand most installers at best buy don't know kicker, or any other kind of sub brands. That is because most of them don't even like car audio, and that is why i quit and moved on to a custom shop, but it's still a great place for a newb.

besides, most custom shops don't hire ppl unless they have a year or so of experience in another shop.

Maaaan im in the same boat...

I am MECP certified ( not that it really means a damn thing) and have been looking for an installer job for over a year now.

Every shop i go to says they want shop experience i ask them how am i supposed to get it if nobody will hire me??

I might have found one but i will have to be shop bitch and thats cool and all but i cant work for free, i am only 19 and on my own paying bills,

We have a shop around here with one the top 100 ranked installers in the nation and i would love to get in there but the dude wont hire me.

UGGGGGHHH, its soo hard starting off, but im just keepin my head up and hoping that one day somebody will see my stuff and like it and want to hire me, but until then its a 9 dollars an hour job and full time college.

Dennis, i hope everything works out for you man and that you get you a good job

Best buy was where i started, and they were looking at hiring other people in the interview process, but then i came in with a professional resume and 3 pages where i collaged all my good installs together.

If you bring in pictures of what you have done it helps a LOT!

i didnt get help at a shop...i did it all by myself in my garage, except for bondoing my panels, but i could have done that. my buddy's dad owns a large sign company, so we just took my panels down there to bondo and sand....but everything you see i did myself 100%, didnt use a shop for the install or advice on anything. if u really wanna learn, u just gotta plan stuff 80% of the time, and wing it the other 20%...
