  • 7 months later...

FINALLY got my birch box started for my SA-12's!!! Not sure if i'm gonna resin the inside or not. Seems like alot of work, alot of cost, alot of mess, for negligible gain since this is just a daily driver. I got the sides and back glued and screwed, noticed the left side was a litte too tall. Test fit the port and top and the port was a little too tall too, nothing my flush trim bit couldn't handle. After handling that, I patched up the holes I had to put in it in the process and letting that dry now. Gotta make a trip to Home Depot to get the hardware for my speaker terminals, will be done by tomorrow for sure. Box is gonna be 3 cubes and tuned to 32Hz

Box is done! Can't wait to see what it sounds like in this box, which is tuned about 3Hz higher and has about a cu.ft. less internal volume than my old prefab I had them in. Wasn't able to get it fired up today as I just got done with it about 30min ago and realized I was 1 ring terminal short, grrrr, so I'll snatch one from work tomorrow and connect the last two (to the speaker wire that connects to the box and amp) and get this thing playing tomorrow night. I have high expectations for this box, I hope it lives up to the hype.

I'm not one to toot my own horn but I gotta pat myself on the back for this one, it's pretty much perfect........except for the nice gouge on the port wall, but that wasn't my fault. I was flush trimming the port opening and was down to the last 3-4" when all of a sudden I heard the router bog down and it kinda jerked, I lifted it immediately and when the blade stopped spinning I noticed the bearing and screw that holds the bearing onto the bottom of the flush trim bit was missing. WTF??!! I reached down into the port into the pile of shavings and found the bearing in there, the screw and washer somehow ended up on my garage floor. I checked everything out and it seems the screw simply backed out cause the threads weren't tripped and the bearing wasn't seized or anything.....weird. So I put it back together and finished up. But damn, that gouge ruined my otherwise perfect box nea.gif Not yet sure what, if anything i'm gonna do to finish the box. I have dreams of building a beauty board but i'm not too confident I can pull that off. It's not so much the board itself as it is getting the sub opening perfect. I know birch looks good stained, but with all those screw holes I don't know that would look too good since the filled holes will be darker than the rest, and there's so many of them. I had to do it like that though to make sure the baffles were all the way seated against each other cause I cut the sub openings a hair too small and even after 2.5hrs sanding them, it was still a super tight fit around the gaskets. Well, here's the pics.
