SQMonte Posted July 19, 2009 Author Report Posted July 19, 2009 i fucking love that headunitIt's sick ain't it? When I first seen it, it was love at first sight! I've heard some stories though about Pioneer and their rca grounding issue so i'm hoping that I won't have that problem. This is my first Pioneer deck ever, i've always been a Kenwood/Alpine/Clarion kind of guy so hopefully this deck comes through for me. looking good, but why waste resin on the amp rack?I have to fiberglass the backside of the amp rack because it will be mounted directly behind my rear seat, with the amps resting vertically, and with those heavy amps bolted to them I want to ensure that the rack won't crumble on me. All of the weight from the amps will be riding on the side pieces, so i'm going to lay down a few layers of fiberglass along each corner joint to reinforce it so it can handle the stress. Does that make any sense or did I just make it even harder to understand?Looks great Monte! Keep the pics coming mang! Thanks, i'm trying my best to have this turn out how I want it, it's quite a challenge since this is my first time working with wood. Not including wood shop back in high school many, many moons ago. Those clamps are fucking sweet, you get those at home depot?Nah, Harbor Freight for $2ea!! They can open up to about 3". LOL. It's gonna suck so bad once I go out to the garage to start glassing, it's nothing short of a sauna in there. Just waiting for the amp enclosure's to dry enough to where I can get going with the glass. Besides car audio, i'm also into car detailing too so that's why she's so purdy I just gotta get under the hood give it a good pressure wash cause its' horrible under there Alpine CDA-117...Memphis 16-X03 CDT Audio SQA-4100...SEAS Prestige H1396...Crescendo MP-6 Soundstream Rubicon 1.2500d...Digital Designs 3512f
SQMonte Posted July 20, 2009 Author Report Posted July 20, 2009 Boy oh boy, today was a challenge. First of all, it was 107* today. Secondly, I was laying down fiberglass for only the second time in my life. It didn't quite turn out as good as I had hoped, but hopefully it'll get the job done just the same. But enough talking, here's what I did today: Finished up the enclosure for my mids/highs amp (not really an enclosure, but couldn't think of a better word to call it) That's the nails I used after the glue cured. I put 4 on each side See where I didn't drive the nail in straight? Using screws would have surely resulted in disaster Both enclosures assembled and ready for fiberglass reinforcement on the back I cut up the glass mat to the size I needed for the job, 24 pieces here, all for this enclosure. 3 pieces = 1 layer, doing 4 layers. 1 gallon bucket, mixed up 6oz of resin, expected this to be enough to finish this enclosure Two pieces layed, no matter how hard I tried I wasn't able to get rid of the frickin' air bubble at the joint After snapping those pics real quick, went back to finish applying the rest of the layers and this is what greeted me I guess 84 drops of hardener in 6oz of resin in 107* weather (most likely much hotter in my garage) was not a good combo Alpine CDA-117...Memphis 16-X03 CDT Audio SQA-4100...SEAS Prestige H1396...Crescendo MP-6 Soundstream Rubicon 1.2500d...Digital Designs 3512f
SQMonte Posted July 20, 2009 Author Report Posted July 20, 2009 Stephen schooled me on how to mix my resin in weather like this so I went back at it and got both enclosures glassed with no issues other than the air pockets at the joints that I just could not get rid of. Remaining hardener The only real issue I have with how the amp enclosures came out is the frickin' air pockets that I couldn't get out at the joints. I think it's because the mat I used was so damn thick that it simply couldn't bend and lay flat at the joint. I just hope that it gives them the strength it needed in order to support the amps, so long as it does, i'm alright with it. So what do you guys think about my work so far? How do you think my glass work came out. Any tips or suggestions on how I could get better results next time?
