Building A Badass Pc, Ideas Please

Recommended Posts

yes, yes and yes! your gonna love that rig. that 920 overclocks like a dream

also when i get this all built, ill be hitting up u and newls1 for help and info with OC'ing as ive never done it, never really needed/wanted to, and i dont wanna mess up nearly 2k worth of hardware :)

last thing im not sure about is a video card. i wanna run nvidia for sure, just not sure which card yet. i dont wanna get too expensive of a card as i dont game (yet haha) but i may get into some games after i get this thing built. if i do, i may consider SLI in the future as well (doubt id do tri-sli even though my board will support it.

id like to run an evga branded card too, ive been reading up on them and looking on their forums, it seems they just have the best customer service and alot of happy customers. doesnt really matter though.

seems alot of people have the evga geforce 9800 gtx+ on newegg for 114 after rebates. but im also considering the 275 card, that looks like a nice card.

nice

have a few questions about RAM

as far as timing goes, is lower the number better?

for example 7-7-7-20 vs 8-8-8-24?

these are the ones im comparing and i cant understand why the one with the lower timing is cheaper?

this is the set i was going to order:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145224

and then i came across this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145253

then there is this, with 9-9-9-24, but its more becuase 1866mhz vs the above 2 which are 1600mhz

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145232

Someone on here said not to go over 8-8-8, but I don't know if that would still apply.

My comp setup (Not bad for what it is):

HP Compaq Presario V6120US laptop with:

15.4" widescreen

AMD Turion 64 X2 1.6GHz processor

2x1GB stick DDR2 SDRAM (667 Mhz)

Seagate Momentus 500GB SATA HDD

128MB shared video memory

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

12 cell Lithium Ion battery (actual battery usage time: 6 hours)

What it does:

On a USB 2.0 Wireless card

with ram, the lower timing, the better. honestly, i wouldnt buy based on the timing, id buy based on the speed capability. I have my ocz ram set at 9-9-9-24 timings and its running at 1684 mhz. Its really fast and scores a 7.9 in the windows experience index, which is the highest.

for a video card, id do something along these lines http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130476

Pull up those first 2 links I posted for the ram. Any idea why the first set, which is 8-8-8-24, ddr3 1600mhz, is 187 dollars, and the 2nd set, same brand/series line, same speed and all, but 7-7-7-20, is 184? Not much of a difference, but idk.

Compusa has the first set cheaper, than the 2nd set. Maybe newegg just has the first set priced a little high? Also not a single review on the 2nd set, and like 300 on the first? Wtf lol.

that is very odd. the second set is a little better. guess newegg has the prices messed up

My funky ram, it has low timing. *meant to add I had no problems with these. They do run hot but ok with good cooling

nice, but im sure he is looking for some ddr3 with higher speeds.

Overlocking the i7 shouldn't be that hard and I am sure you will get a D0 stepped one which will be awesome. Anything along the lines of GTX 275 is great. 275 has similar architecture to the 285, just made it at a certain price point to compete with the ATI 4890.

The one with the Cas Latency of 7 is the one to go with. It's newly released. Dominator Ram is basically XMS3 with better heat sinks, directed towards OC'rs. Also it doesn't really matter, you can even run slower ram if you are going to overclock. But if you run a retailed 920, the faster ram should automatically run at 1600mhz.

Lol dude there is a difference between some budget rams and higher spec memory. Run some bandwidth benchmarks, etc....

Actually timing and latency are important factors, but it's nice when you buy 2100ish mhz ram, because you know it has the potential to safely run at those speeds.

I'm checking out that card now, I have the evga e758 board, dominator 6gb ram (the 7 cas latency) and the i7 920 added to cart. Just need a card that's 249.03 so my total can be 999 dollars so I can use my newegg account and get no interest for 12 months so I don't have to pay it in one payment :-)

it doesn't really have to be 250 dollar card, ill buy an hdmi cable or a cpu heatsink or something I may want.
