I was in auto zone looking at yellow tops, and told that guy what i want and he suggested just getting a new 100 amp alternator for 180, plus install. would that be good for anything over 1k? or do i need something over 100?

what car do you have?

100A is about what stock alternators are.

Get something over 130amps. I have a 100amp alt and it isnt big enough, so i went with a 220 amp alt

That might even be less than what your stock alt may be doing lol.

my factory alt is 120A

I wouldnt go through the trouble unless its 200A or up.

but for a 1000w system, you dont need one, just do a nice battery and better wiring.

x3, he is probably just telling you what the replacement option is for your car, I dont think Autozone sells anything but direct replacement parts, so basically you will be getting an alt that put out the exact same your current one puts out, Hit up MechMan or DC Power Rob, and they will hook you up.

volvo 850.

and i was thinking of it because a yellow top there is like, 200, and i could get a bigger alt and keep the same battery and be able to get a 2k plus system down the road..

and i have no idea what the stock output is now..

Call up Ohio Gen if you're in the market for an HO alt, you won't regret it. Don't know a single person dissapointed with their product quality or customer service.
