NcHalfrican
So I'm pretty new to the car audio "scene"(haha) and was wondering if underpowering damages your sub? Was lookin at 2 alpine type x 12's and was wondering how much rms in an amp would be recommended for them Thanks in advance for info
tripleb45
I dont think that will damage your sub as a matter of fact I think that underpowering a sub will allow it to last longer. As long as the amp is in good condition. A bad amp makes a bad sub.

Crump
If your settings are correct, you shouldnt be able to blow the subs if your underpowering them Edited October 24, 2009 by Crump Quote Team gg Team doa Installs I have doneMy 2010 Rebuild 144 db so far....2 DC xl 10s Firing into cabin on a RF 25002 12" AQ HD's powered by a Saz 2k + Lots o Mids+Highs
tripleb45
let a professional set your gains. It may seem simple but this can be crucial to the life of your subs and amps.
finkster
no, underpowering your subs doesnt damage them. What do u think happens when you turn down the volume a sub is blown either from mechanical or thermal failure. Failure shouldnt happen at RMS...even if clipping. CaptainzPlanetz
The reason why you hear stories of people blowing there say 1000rms sub off of a 400rms amp is they end up trying to get more output from there amp than it is capable of, by turning the gains and bass boost all the way up, as well as all the settings on the deck maxed out, and what they end up doing is sending a big ol square clipped signal to the sub, which ends up damaging the sub. Someone correct me if I am wrong please. Edit: To finkster, Wouldnt a clipped signal cause your coils to heat up, more than normal? And this would cause you coil to possibly fail. LordArcane
if your not clipping your singal then its fine but even under powered wit a clipped signal could blow your subs from what i understand
Noobtastic14
if you try and push the amp to far and clip it may damage the woofer on less power, but a clean signal at or below RMS should not damage the woofer in a controlled environment. If the sub would "blow" with to little power it would smoke every time you turned the music down. -Drew Quote I am a United States Military Arts and Crafts Professional.
