RAID 5, not reliable anymore?

Recommended Posts

i did mention in that in my build thread, but i hadent read this article at that time, and plus my board i ended up with only does 0, 1, 0+1, and 5. not worth buying a card that does raid 6 either way IMO.

Dedicated RAID controller cards have much more capability then a nVidia, AMD/ATi, or Intel chipset.

these comments make sense..

"Ever watched an idle set of drives blinking away when there was no disk activity? That's the raid controller checking the consistency of the drives."

"If your intelligent RAID controller does regular consistency checks, your chances of hitting a URE during rebuild are almost zero. The consistency checks will identify a URE before the disk failure, mark the space as bad, and create a new parity copy in a new location. You find the UREs before a disk fails and has to be rebuilt."
