If the power FETs had failed you would be getting a lot of big sparks and blown fuses right now.

EDIT: FETs can easily fail without looking outwardly blown. Got a multimeter with a diode test function?

yes, I know most of the time they short or open internally.

And yes, I have a multimeter. The problem is, Can i check them while they are still attached to the circuit board? Or do I need to remove them so it will not be reading other components within circuit?

Edit: Diode check. yes, i was thinking resistance check. but wouldnt this only check for a short?

I will go test the power and output fet's right now

You can check them in-place :) Really you're just looking for shorts but it's possible you'll get some funky readings which will hint towards bad parts. Especially if you get readings backwards or anything like that.

Just to be aware of it, those amps might use a split N/P channel output section. So some of the FETs will read differently... if you can whip the clamps off (also lets you check for cracked cases or residue) make sure they all have the same part number before jumping to any conclusions :)

EDIT: Never mind the N/P thing - if they're the same amp I'm thinking of they use IRFB31N20D in the output section.

I just talked to power acoustics and they said they will fix it for 110$ so i dont really want to mess around with it too much. I took the botton and side caps off and it appears like this amp would really suck to seperate from the heatsink.. Im going to test the FET's now anyways

Damn, it used to be $150 to get your amp repaired. I know, I've had five of them go up in smoke way back when. Three under warranty, the other two just outside of warranty. They said it would be $30 to ship them back, but after I got the amps back. My money order for shipping was always returned. I will NEVER run another PA amp again. EVER!!!

It's all gone!
