Gear Shift Stuck

well i got my cousin car here and his gear shift is stuck

its a 99' alero

the button on the knob doesent go all the way in so i cant push the handle down

to put it in reverse or drive etc.

it did it before but it eventually worked but i been trying for the past 15mins

if its anything like mine it flares up every now and then...i have my shifter in the center console and a solenoid gets activated by the brake pedal...it can be 1 of 2 things, its going out, or its just dirty/dusty/grimy (like mine was)

i did

push the brake and let the brake down

well il let my uncle check it out

most cars have a little manual button somewhere on the gear shifter base.... you gotta pop a little tab or this cap off.. and you press it down with a screwdriver...

Exact thing happened to my friend with a zx2 he had to reach under the console and manually push it
