Don't forget this (cult) car was build in the poor East Germany during the cold war... In time there wasn't steel (because the Russians used all the steel for the warfare against the Europe and the USA) and oil (because the Russians used all the oil for the warfare against the Europe and the USA). That is why the whole body of the car is build with 'duroplast' (some kind of cheap-ass polyester immitation) and they used the small 2-stroke engine so everyone can fix it with a hammer and a screwdriver.
