Using computer case fans in car audio

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone uses computer case fans in amp rack builds. I wanted to use (6) 80mm fans. Just wondering how you wired them. The fans I wanted to use are (4) pin 12 volts fans.

I figure I would cut off the adapter thing. Would you hook it up like you would a HU? Yellow/red to power/constant, black to ground?

people do it all the time, just wire them with a relay to your back battery and remote turn on and you're set

with those you will never have to worry about heat. and those apevia's suck something fierce. continues use you will be lucky if you get 6 months out of those fans and maybe 3 months from the LED's

EDIT: Fail on my part for thinking it had LEDs, just UV reactive plastic, but i still recommend those Sythe Ultra Kazes. I normally have a pair cooling my water radiator on my PC but during the winter i switch em out cuz it gets to cold to sit next to the case without bundling up....and im not bundling up in heated house

exactly...just minus the switch...the remote turn on will control the on/off

So basically, just like an amp? yellow/red to power, black to ground. Not sure which wire would be hooked up to the remote though. Any thoughts?

Those fans pull like 1A at startup, keep that in mind. They also have a slight back emf when switched off.

They have 3 wires but it's not like an amp where 1 wire turns the fan on. The 3 wires are power, ground and speed detection. You need to wire them to a relay. They will kill the remote circuit in your deck if you wire them directly to the remote.
