The shops around here are pretty knowledgeable overall but they only sell the mainstream stuff RF, Alpine, Kenwood, Kicker, JL, etc. I went to a shop, probably the biggest in my area, and they have decent prices. I only go there if I really need something, like fuses, ring terminals, etc. small stuff. A guy asked me what I had, I told him an AQ HD3 15 and a Sundown 1200d. His reply "Oh nice. Never heard of it." and proceeded to cash me out, lawl. I should have gave him a demo.

No matter where in the world you are or what industry it is in. There will is going to be good and bad places to go. There is places that have earned there rep so they have people that come from all over to go there. Then there are the ones that just looking to make money as quick as they can. Then there are ones with good intentions and bad knowladge base or lack of work force because they are so over protective of the moto they live by, and endless other combos.

The biggest thing is finding people you enjoy as people, once you gain there respect they will work with you to the end. But if you go in acting like an ass, they will only treat you like one. If you give them a good reason behind what your looking to get and the reason why you want it. This will show you have knowladge behind it and will normally work with you. Maybe this guy was crazy into the scene back in the early 80s, and just figured he knew it all. Give him reason to do more research and build his shop with the help of what you have to offer and I am sure you will build a relationship that they will almost bend over backwords when they find out your just into the scene it self and not an ass that thinks they know it all.

shops arent there for people like us that do crazy shit and have knowledge, they're there to install remote starts for your mom, kiss the asses of rich kids with their parents money and first car, and do basic installations. 99.9% of the time that is all a shop does. custom jobs, big installs, fiberglass, etc is that extra .1%. Don't be surprised if a shop isnt experienced in work like that, or is not familiar with the product offerings of the thousands of audio companies out there. I know my shop is up to 50,000 individual items in the product list, and thats 50,000 things to know the price of, appearance, specs, and model number of. oh, so you need a remote turn on and hi-lo? dei is part number 55000 and 55020, pac/peripheral is a pgli and a lvt (or ptr7), but jl, mtx, audiocontrol, and rockford all build it too! all have different features/prices/part numbers. Most employees never even learn about everything they stock, let alone the hundreds of thousands of products they dont.

Fi and AA are not a car stereo shops bread and butter. It's installing remote central locking on your Mom's shopping trolley.

Occasionally you'll find a shop where someone has a bit of knowledge about boutique/extreme stuff (i.e. me or Raytard or Ray etc etc) but they're the exception not the rule.

I went to a local shop to grab some stuff I forgot to get when buying my stuff. The guy told me when I called oh yeah we have that and sell it. I drive an hour there and the tard in the shop says oh we only sell it on our installs, not to the public.

I didnt get pissy just walked out and ordered it from darvex and waited a couple extra days.

Moral of the story, learn everything you can so you don't have to go to a local shop.

When I managed the shop I was at, I never put down anything. I installed everyone's equipment regardless of where it came from, and guess what? Our installs shot thru the roof. People came out of the woodwork, from everywhere. It tripled my bonuses:)

damn toaster. you're def right. its a nice thing when a customer walks in and mentions they have an atomic sub, and they get a response of "an apxx or did you not need the ability to hold down 30kw?". I've had a lot of customers come back because we not only knew what a FI BTL was, but had custom designed boxes for them, installed them, and knew how to power them right. The problem is just that the amount of people that have it as both a job and a passion are hard to find. the majority of people at our shows run stuff that we do not carry, and knowing what is out there is a big help, but most people just plain don't care. You can probably get lucky and find a shop where the people there care about audio as more than a paycheck, but unfortunately it will require some searching.

There are some good shops out there, you just have to find them. Only shop I have found around my house that is good with their shit and doesn't bash other brands that they don't sell is "Extreme Audio". From what I have seen the few times being there, they know their shit about tons of brands, and they do custom installs and all. There is a member on this forum that use to be on their team "Team JBL" that I have talked to. They are pretty nice people that know their shit though, and I am glad there is at least one shop like that around my house. Will be visiting them next week to get metered.
