bcpballer64 Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Ok so I'm designing a box for an 18" SMD/AA and just wanted to know if this looked good to you folks? Watch the bass Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Intresstin design, but i would do 3 or 4 times MDF the frontwall with thick 1. "in the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty" Bob Marley
kirill007 Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 I would tune it a bit higher, like 34hz. And 12cu ft is waay to big, 8cu ft will be more then enough.(What amp is going to power this beast?) 8cu ft and 120sq inches of port area would be a good start. EDIT: and x2 on what Watch the bass said. At least double up everything and triple baffle. Also add some bracing.(even brace the port, because it's going to flex) Thinking is the root of all problems... You ALWAYS get what you pay for.

bcpballer64 Posted March 14, 2010 Author Report Posted March 14, 2010 What amp is going to be used? Idk exactly im a designer for hire. He said its going to be running 5-8k rms whatever i recommend. kirill007 Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Idk exactly im a designer for hire. He said its going to be running 5-8k rms whatever i recommend. What do you think? If he's trying to run 5k to this sub and doesn't knows how to build the box himself, he is going to blow the sub real fast. (Ask him what amp(s) he is going to use.) But for 5k the box needs to be around 5-6 cu ft, probably 5.5cu ft would be the best. 5.5cu ft with around 75 sq inches of port area tuned to 34hz, so there is enough cone control. If he's trying to run 5k with a box bigger then 6cu ft and a lot of port area, he is probably going to launch the cone. EDIT: i would recommend 3.5-4k max if he hasn't used that much power before. 3k and a 7.5 cu ft box with 110-120 sq inches of port area tuned to 33-34hz would be ideal for him. Ben Building Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 You can get away with using less wood if you brace the box in all three dimensions. Also, a 45 at the bottom in front of the port would be good since you have some extra space to play with. As long as it's clean power then you have some leeway with the power input. Next time, though, try and find out how much power before you design the box. That way, you can adjust the port and vb accordingly. I like the design, BTW.

Ok ill pass this on and give it to him as consideration. You can get away with using less wood if you brace the box in all three dimensions. Modeling the boxes take literally a third the time it does for me to figure out the other stuff. I'm still revising the box if i get one figured out thats decent ill post it up in this thread. Sanitarium Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 wait, you're a "designer for hire" and you're having to get your designs double checked on the smd forums? you wouldn't be gettin MY money that's for SURE.
