Toady Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 also, to those that dont think the numbers are good enough, how many Hummers are running around with a 156 on the new TL mic? If those subs were shoved to the B Pillar and walled of like a REAL SPL DBDRAG NUMBER CHASING VEHICLE with a big fat driver side port and wooden floors, 2" Plexi windows with doors clamped shut, im sure the numbers would go up.....but this is a GROUNDPOUNDING EARTHSHAKER, not a one note wonder. When i go to a car show with the Hoe, nobody gives a shit about that car that did a 165 and you couldnt hear it on the outside.....but its a NON STOP AMUSEMENT PARK RIDE over by my car, all day from the minute i roll in till i leave..... just know the difference people, thats all To me this is what audio is all about, 1 note that lasts roughly 10-30 secs isnt music or what a sound system is about, enjoying the music and songs you love while everything is flexing is true car audio. ED AND TRIPPI, this build is insane!!!, i love it, as long as you love it, and you are happy with it, then that deserves a thumbs up bro :drinks:
PUNKYOU007 Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Thats bassically what I was telling people at the comp. Numbers dont mean much of shit except for at comps. As long as everyone is happy with there install and satisfied with the sound, that's all that matters. Nobody cares about numbers. Trippi, it was great to finally get to meet you. Hell of a cool guy, truck is amazing. The only thing I dont like about the box is its too damn hard to see into it will all the reflection. I tried to get close and look in but I didn't wanna get my KFC prints all over it. Those highs are crazy loud! You probably could have went to the other side of the shopping center and heard it loud and clear! I did miss those 30's tho. It was a pleasure. Thanks Doethepaperboy "Bars of Pain" Doethepaperboy "Hero Remix" C. Arson d(-__-)b beer sucks...but i can bring some jose cuervo. Only problem is that it makes me horny and gives me the rams. 01xtreme Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Great build, Ed. Not taking anything away from your build, but why is it trippi decided to not go with a wall??? Contrary beliefs posted in this thread, walling off a vehicle doesn't mean it's going to be a one note wonder. There isn't alot of room between the roof and top of the box, it seems like it would have performed better if it was just walled off. Im sure there was a determining factor, just curious as to what it was. Chode69 Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Ok first I will say that I am open to good advice. However, by seeing what you have done and especially not done, and be reading the ignorance of mis info you have written. I will choose not to listen to the nobody that is you. You seem not to understand how these builds work. You talked to the owner of aa? Do you mean Scott? Ooh. Did he tell you how the woofer could have been designed better?, did he tell you how they heat up easily? Especially with 6000w per coil? And I certainly did use an oscope for adjustments. And set it all for max unclipped levels. But there happens to be a bass knob that trippi can set on the fly depending on what he is doing. How bout that box design, do you know the specs and measurements? Did you know that its exactly to what aa recommends? Oh the port isn't long enough or big enough? Well it is tuned with an f3 of 29hz. Do you know what f3 means? More port area huh? Try it with 15" deep subs. How bout the plex? Yes it should be bolted. 2 way force application of over 500 lbs couldn't be left to chance with just a chemical bond. And the bond is a plex epoxy thank you. Sorry if I used silicone in the corners to be sure it stays sealed, didn't know it was wrong to be double sure that something works properly. Ahh the amps, yes mounting them up there was always a concern, but did you see me hanging from the ceiling? Do the amps even really move that much. Stuff in the car may break, a hatch hinge already did. Maybe windshield makers in boilermakers trailblazer don't know how to make glass. The nay sayers disappear and the innovators live on. First things first - I have never posted in here. But some things need to be set straight. This is nothing against Trippi or his vehicle as I think it is a cool idea. I commend you for the money that you have spent and hope you are happy with however things are. It definitely sucks to be the first person ever to kill an SMD...and I want to know why. I am currently on the east coast working on some other projects and can recone it for you so you do not have to pay to ship it all the way back to vegas and save you some money. Now, I will correct what needs to be corrected as Mr. Lester said that he is open for good advice. Ed, Do you understand that 99% of the energy that you are putting into the coil is nothing but BURNED OFF HEAT...you are only hearing 1% of what you put in it..ONE PERCENT. That is on a speaker that is 94.1dB 1w/1m efficient...and the SMD is not. There is no other woofer period that will take that amount of power...NONE. If you are burning shit up then YOU SET SOMETHING UP WRONG. Of course it is going to heat up...that's what the hell a speaker does. The coil acts exactly like the element in a hair dryer...it heats up that's what makes sound! Speakers are stupid, they only do what you tell them to do in the environment that you put them in. The air flow and loaded for the design to turn any sort of a decent number is absolutely horrid. I can only imagine how far the tuning is thrown off by the loading issues in the back of the vehicle. Plexi, should not be bolted and you should not use silicone. It should be chemically bonded and heat treated just as the great Bobby Gately did many years ago. You should remember him...he is one of the best plexi fabricators in the country. You never saw his glue joints look like shit, you never saw him use a single bolt either. When the plexi is bonded with the proper bonding agents it actually melts the two surfaces together, you then treat it with a torch and you have a totally seamless edge...with no cover up trying to hide things..seen below. If you honestly think that a bolt is stronger threaded into a piece of plastic then chemically bonded you need to go back to engineering school. You put the amps..in the roof..with DRYWALL SCREWS. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that drywall screws back out. You should have plotted everything out on your last sheet of MDF and bonded in 1/4-20 hurricane nuts (or T-nuts), bonded them in with epoxy and fiberglassed over the back side of them. Then you should have put the last layer of MDF on to begin mounting the amplifiers to the roof. Upon doing so you should apply a dot of silicone to each one of the threads of the BOLTS going into the amplifier, so they do not vibrate out. Drywall screws are for drywall, not for screwing amps down. You are supposed to use security screws, or socket cap screws, and you are supposed to be able to grab the amplifier and support 'substantial weight' off of it in the rack without the rack moving or the amp coming off. This is all basic IASCA stuff from hours of time spent with some of the industries greatest fabricators...Gary Biggs..and Mark Eldgridge. You can walk up to their cars and literally pull the car with the amplifier and speaker rings...they actually fabricate things how they should be. It is not delicate, it is not half assed. Wires...the point of wires is for them to be there and to not see them. UNLESS you are doing it decoratively. Which at that point you should invest in a tubing bender and aluminum tubing to run the wires through the tubing or brass tubing to clean things up. You have wires hanging out of the roof on the back panel from it sagging down because it is not secured properly. That isn't even getting into the security aspect of the battery rack or the welding of the sweet 1/8" (maybe 1/4") flat stock material and sticking a bolt through factory wheel well material in sheer to hold up 460 pounds of batteries. Seen below: Dude if he takes a turn too quick and gets the truck a little sideways (or god forbid gets into an accident) those little welds are going to snap and the bolt is going to pull through the fricking wheel well because you probably did not think to put a series of large flat washers or a big 'splint' out of 1/4" flat stock to spread the load out through the wheel well. You might have thought of that one though. That..should not be like that. You are not supposed to see ANY wires. You're right..the innovators do live on...if I showed up and it was my vehicle and saw that...you wouldn't live on. Especially with the kind of money involved here. You would work on this thing until it is fixed to my standards...I know Trippi has spent an incredible amount of money on this vehicle and considering that..I think he deserves for it to be done properly. There's your good advice,I can go on for days if you so wish but these are the few big issues with the work at hand, I explained this as politely as I could possibly make it, It is not meant to hurt any feelings or get any tempers in a tantrum, take it for what its worth, and fix it. Trippi Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Posted September 7, 2010 name='TeejayBee' date='07 September 2010 - 10:15 AM' timestamp='1283865351' post='1197387'] trippi all i gota say is damn that hummer is loud i hope to hear it one more time before i leave but who knows thanks man...nice meeting you...good luck in the service Here's my question. Trippi you spent how much on this? And you're happy with it? (those are rhetorical lol ) That's all that matters. You'll always have someone who coulda woulda shoulda did it this way. Especially when its all pipe dreams to have something like that. lol...thanks i was amazed at this build...i loved every bit of it. and yet its still not even done..yes wires are shown and what not but its still not done. John just because you talked to the owner about these subs doesnt mean you know everything about them...i talk to Rusty quite a bit but doesnt mean i know every aspect of DC subwoofers...far from..and you claiming you do know all about these subs is a very vein statement. just for closure yea you said all that but you still didnt fully say what you had to about Ed and Trippi themselves...which i still doubt you will. and with the sub blowing...ever heard of product failure...it happens..and those amps go into red without any volume...i dont know why but id have my volume halfway up and bass knob all the way down and they went into the red and the subs were barely even moving...but im going to stop now and respect Trippis and Eds build by not trying to stir any shit. keep up the good work guys...awesome 155.5 at the show Trippi and hope to see you at more...i had a blast and it looked like you did to. yeah i had a ball man bottom line. if trippi loves it then it really doesn't matter what ANYONE else thinks. period. nice meeting you Ric..thanks for the tips i personally love the install and i love where those amps are mounted. It looks safe to me so i dont know what the fuss is about. The box looks and works great! Who is this guy to tell you that theres something wrong with the box? Anyway, Trippi, Ed, just take the shit talkers for what it is, exposure. Its what i deal with every hour of every single day. Some gonna' love it, some gonna hate it, some gonna critisize even though they dont even have a car or never built a basic box. Ive done builds almost to this scale (as you know) and i dont see any reason for me to nit pick on this ride so why would someone who has never been there before even think about it? Just kick back and enjoy it for what it is and learn from the pics you see.....if you see something you would do different, then do it DIFFERENT when building your own monster system. And if its so bad in your eyes that you cant resist saying something, why be a punk about it, why not be courteous and respectful about it? Why not say something to the mans face while your there instead of running home and getting up on the net? ED.....GREAT JOB on this build my friend. You busted your ASS on it and i respect you bro. man i dont know how you do it.. Trippi man I saw the hummer for the first time sunday and all I can say is wow. Its a beast and I think the craftsmanship is amazing. If your happy thats all that matters. Ed did great work on the build so mad props to him. Cant wait to see it again at the next show!! thanks also, to those that dont think the numbers are good enough, how many Hummers are running around with a 156 on the new TL mic? I'm at the beach so I don't wanna go and keep arguing all your points about things you don't know about. Just a few. I did use acrylic weld epoxy on the plex. I did not screw the amps with drywall screws, actually used RF screws. Amp panels are not sagging, thats how they line up. I did not mount the batteries and agree the welds weren't the best. Truck is still not finished and exposed wires are getting panels made now. And your bs about your woofer designs from industrial apps is crap. Any woofer, any at all will have a hard time with 6k daily. The smd is a good woofer but certainly not indestructible and a couple woofers are built to handle more. Thanks man..belive it or not, I knew you would chime in soon. I would love it if you could recone it for me..I picked the perfect time to f it up..lol. Just let me know what I need to do..302 218 8630 or you can pm me. And all of this really isn't Ed's fault..the battery rack was already done when he got the truck and those hanging wires are on the agenda to be taken care of...he isn't finished with it yet. I just always snatch it up to take to a show. I do like the way the batteries are exposed though. If that's a no no I will cover them up. Thanks for your input. ~~~~CHODE FTW~~~~ DC4LYFE
