In theory it is supposed to store energy so that your system dosent outrun your alternator, or something like that, it is supposed to keep your lights from dimming ect. The problem with them is that they just add another drain to your battery and alternator, without helping anything at all.

That cap isn't gonna do jack shit. Half a farad is less energy than a 9v battery. Sell it to some sucker on craigslist or ebay and put your profit towards a battery.
