Adding onto a Bose system?

This is just a general question im curious about. My dad has a 2003 Nissan Maxima with a Bose sound-system. NO navi btw, just radio. Well he has mentioned giving me the car a few times. So I obviously thought about possible things I'd do to it if I had it. First and for-most, tints. 2nd, audio.

I know Bose makes a good system and since it is a daily driver and I'm not rich I wouldnt spend much on it.

Originally I thought of adding a head unit, component up front and then a single sub.

BUT, I have been reading this isnt a simple task, replacing the head unit is apparently an expensive process b/c of how the speakers are wired up and they have mini amps or something etc.

Apparently you need to by pass something.

Then I thought of JUST adding a sub. Some people said this isnt worth it since it'll mess up the sound.

Which part of all this is true? And basically I'm asking you guys.

If you had the car, with a bugdet, what would you do to it?

I feel like I would just second skin a lot of the car, add a single sub and call it a day.

my jeep had an stock amp, dident need to by pass anything, then again, i added an amp to my speakers(new speakers new amp), but for the headunit alone you shouldent need anything more then a h/u and a wiring harness

IMO Bose is not very good, not terrible, but not as good as it's thought it is. <---does that make sense? lol

I can't see how it can get expensive if there is no navi, it's the navis that make it expensive. you just need to disconnect and remove all the Bose stuff, then put your new stuff in. I would only get tricky if you wanted to keep some of the Bose stuff as they use a weird system.

Even with a navi you can bypass it completely to allow the install of new gear.

Adding a sub is insanely easy, all you need to do is tap an RCA into the left rear speaker (+,-) and right (+,-)

The first headunit I ever installed was actually a bose system in a 96 or so maxima. Basically the way it was is there was an amplifier attached to every speaker. Got the headunit from crutchfield and bought a level converter like they suggested that plugged right into the harness and converted the high level speaker outs to the low level for the individual speaker amps to amplify again. If yours is the same way, you could either go this same route or replace the speakers with something better at the same time.

woah there, hold on. No, you can't. Speakers are high level... amp inputs are low level. You at the minimum need a level converter ($10 or so)

put a 4ch line convertor in. like a sven4 or the likes.

everything will turn on.

after you have a deck in, adding a sub is cake
